Musical Happiness
I bought this phono stage as an upgrade to my Cambridge Audio 651.The performance of the 651 is brilliant at it's price but like anything in life , it can be bettered.I chose the Heed after reading as many reviews of it and others. Out of the box, it sounded a good deal better than the 651 but I was aware that things improve after a burn in period. That has proven to be a bit longer than usual but the differences are well worth waiting for. The sound is very well balanced with neither bass nor treble being dominant.True the bass does have a very slight lift to it but not as to interfere with the overall balance, and actually suited my system (Linn LP 12 with a Goldring 2500 cartridge, Creek Evolution 100 amp and Epos Epic 2 speakers).I am not going to say I can suddenly hear things that I couldn't before, but the sound is smooth, musical and the sound staging is slightly wider and most noticeable is that the performers seem to be slightly closer to my listening position making it more involved.I also discovered that by reducing the cartridge tracking down from 1.75 to 1.6, the vocals were crisper, so don't be afraid to experiment with that or altering speaker placement.I am very happy with the improvements this has made and the biggest thing I have found is that I just want to keep playing music. In fact on the handbook of this Heed appears the motto..."Forget Hi Fi...Remember music". That says it all. Well worth the price and must be considered as a worthwhile upgrade.
