A great solution for certain dogs
Our background situation is that we have a dog who has always been hesitant to let us cut her front toenails. Still, she usually let us until a couple months ago. We have no idea what caused it but now she is completely petrified to have us come near her front nails. I am able to touch her feet and play with her toes but as soon as nail clipper or grinder approaches she turns into a neurotic mess. No nail trimming trauma in her past so the difficulty the seems unexplainable. We have tried to patiently reacclimate her, but nothing seemed to be working and her nails were getting dangerously long. At this point the only thing that we figured could help would be putting her under in order to cut her nails. In a last ditch attempt to find a more reasonable alternative, we spent the money for this item. It was not without hesitancy since the cost is pricier than we would have liked. However, I am so glad we went for it. Now, our dog is a natural digger, frequently trying to fluff her bed or burrow through the carpet until redirected. But she's also a bit of a brat, so I wasn't sure she would acclimate to this nail file. But it only took about 10 minutes of training and she understood. While she will now occasionally half-heartedly paw at the nail file thinking that's enough for a reward, we are able to tell her to paw more seriously and she complies. What is very impressive to me is the quality of the file. This Is not mere sandpaper and only a few paws at it make a significant difference in nail length. The nail grinding is obviously not going to be completely even because it depends on how the dog positions her foot, but it is still completely sufficient for our purposes. For the first time in months I'm no longer worried about the potential of foot problems because her nails kept growing. And though she tends to paw with her left more than her right, she has quickly learned to switch paws on command. I'm very thankful for the design of this item.

Genius!!!
This product has been a God send for my young German Shepherd! I’ve rescued and fostered GSDs most of my life. They are big babies who are known for not being fond of their feet being touched. Our last foster fail came to us about a year ago. It’s crazy how he loves to “hold hands” but the second there’s a trimmer in my hand it’s game over! The vet couldn’t even do it and said I would need to sedate him prior to a nail trim. This wasn’t an option I was fond of so I set out to research and came across this product. I know there’s some mixed reviews but I’m so glad I took the chance. It took maybe 2 sessions for Arlo to get it and now he’s a pro! Make sure you put high value treats in there and the second they scratch once, reward! Repeat til they get it. And increase the number of times they scratch before the next reward (opening the slide so they can have a treat) Only caution is to reward in between a few scratches and keep checking they don’t get too short because it files them down quickly! Really appreciate this stress free and low cost (in the big picture) option! No stress and trips to the groomer or vet! It does not do the back nails nor dew claws. I get the dews quickly while he’s napping. Best back technique is with 2 people. Person in from has spray cheese or peanut butter. It’s enough distraction for the person in back to trim quickly!

An excellent tool for dogs who hate having their nails clipped.
Unfortunately, Amazon is no longer carrying this product. It is far as superior to any of the other dog nail file boards being offered. It has a stainless steel surface that was raised just enough for a dog to remove bits of nail as the dog pawed the surface trying to get to the treats in the hidden compartment. One of my dogs was so difficult that she needed to be tranquilized in order for her nails to be done. But with this wonderful nail file system, she would do the job herself. Her groomer even commented that there was nothing that needed to be done during her appointment. It took no time for my dog to learn that the compartment would “magically” open after she had pawed the surface several times. And my other two dogs learned rapidly as well. My groomer wanted to recommend it to other clientele, but sadly it is no longer being offered. And I would discourage anyone from buying any of the others that are using basic sandpaper to grind the nails down.

Will take some practice, and some dogs take to it quicker, but then it's amazing!
****Update 6/28/22. We have now had this for 7 months and both my timid/fearful dog and my energetic fearless dog are complete pros! They even know to take turns. It's like game night when I pull this out; they get so excited. There is no sign of wear and tear after all these months with 2 medium/large dogs. Looks brand new and works like it did on day one!*** One of my dogs figured it out right away and is enthusiastic about playing the game, and therefore filing his nails. My other dog has a much more timid nature, and while we are now at the point where she will put her paw on the device to get the treat, she has not yet begun to dig for it, so therefore no filing just yet. We have only had it a few weeks, and I know it's a process. I'm hoping to get there with her! It is obviously very well made, high quality. I love that you can run your hand over the filing surface and it is not sharp like a razor, yet if you run your nail over it, you feel it filing it very clearly. Clever design and safe! It's expensive for sure, but this is a small business and they are making them by hand. It makes sense to me, and it should last a really long time. I see it as a good investment. Both dogs get excited when I pull it out. The instructional videos were super helpful.

This product works really well with our younger dog who does not like having his feet touched at all! As he's still quite young he scratches at the board with vigour and that definitely helps with keeping his front paw nails filed. As our dogs are Med/Large sized, it doesn't really work on their back paw claws but at least these are weight baring and hence not such a big problem. The older (7yo) is too gentle so I use a rotary file for him as although he doesn't like it, he will let me do it. I don't know how we would manage with the younger one without this product. I would recommend it.

So happy with this purchase. We’ve only had it for 2 days but already my Weimaraner’s very thick, overgrown nails are grinding down, and she is getting the hang of the game fairly quickly. Finally an answer to an issue we’ve faced for years !
