Flash TTL HSS GX-F990 for Canon EOS 1300D, 1200D, 550D, 650D, 600D, 750D, 700D, 5D, 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III, 6D, 60D, 7D, 7D Mark II

This is my first experience of a TTL flash, and I am using it with a Canon 7D MkII. The things that impress me are the more mundane aspects: the accurate measurement of flashlight through the lens; the built-in diffuser; the effectiveness of the unit when used outdoors as a fill-in flash.Other features include flash sync up to 1/8000th second, and strobe lighting. While these features certainly work, they are less likely to be used. Also, it's worth emphasising that you can buy only a Canon or a Nikon version of this flash. Otherwise, the unit can only be used as an accessory, triggered by another flash.On researching this item it seemed that all reviews mentioned this unit's ability to synchronise flash at very high shutter speeds (up to 1/8000th). The instruction manual that came with my unit if for a GX-F990, while the unit itself is identified as GX-F990C. Perhaps this is why there is no mention of high-speed synchronisation in this manual. You will need to discover the FP (Focal Plane) instruction on the unit. In summary, this flash synchronises at high shutter speeds, but you may have to discover for yourself how to access this facility.I'm at a stage where the text in most manuals is too small to read comfortably, and this one is no exception. I scanned the English section at high resolution and saved it as a PDF. Now the manual is available to read via my tablet computer.I've been a long-time user of cameras, and mostly avoided flash due to unpredictable and unpleasant results. This unit promises to put an end to those experiences.

Arrived promptly. Looks and feels a substantial piece of kit. Put 4 rechargeable batteries in it and photographed a wedding and still had plenty of power left - very impressed. Looking forward to trying out all the modes but still mastering it with my new Canon 70D.No criticism of it at the moment!
