This should be on the School Curriculum
If you are looking for a quick, entry-level read that completely cuts through the standard mainstream media talking points regarding the IsraelโPalestine conflict, this book is an absolute must-read. Ilan Pappรฉ manages to condense over a century of incredibly dense, complex historyโstretching from late 19th-century Ottoman rule, through the British Mandate, the Nakba of 1948, and all the way up to the devastating events following October 7thโinto a highly accessible, concise overview. What makes this book stand out is that Pappรฉ completely rejects the conventional "two equal sides in a tragic dispute" framework. Instead, he analyzes the situation through the lens of settler colonialism. He does an incredible job of deconstructing foundational mythsโlike the old Zionist slogan that Palestine was "a land without a people for a people without a land"โby meticulously showing the vibrant, rich, and deeply rooted society that Palestinian Arabs had built long before 1948. He clearly illustrates how the modern crisis is not a sudden, isolated explosion of violence, but the ongoing result of systematic displacement. The authorโs background adds immense weight and credibility to the text. Pappรฉ is a world-renowned Israeli historian (now a professor at the University of Exeter) and a key figure among Israel's "New Historians." This group used declassified Israeli state archives to rigorously re-examine and challenge their own country's founding narrative. Because his archival research led him to conclude that the 1948 expulsions were a premeditated, deliberate policy of ethnic cleansing, he faced severe backlash and ostracization in Israel, eventually moving to the UK. Having an Israeli-born academic use his own state's official records to deconstruct these historical narratives gives this book a profound sense of authority. It is an unapologetic, eye-opening, and deeply necessary primer for anyone wanting to understand the structural roots of what is happening today. Highly recommended.

Ilan Pappรฉ, A Very Short History of the Israel-Palestine Conflict, (2024).
The ferocity and inhumanity of Israel's "response" (Pappรฉ concludes the October 7 2023 Hamas attack was a pretext) has shocked appalled, and enraged the majority of the world. In this short book Pappรฉ, a history professor at the University of Exeter, traces the the history of Jewish Zionist (since he begins his survey in the nineteenth century) and Israeli approaches to Palestine. This is a well written and informative book that conveys a great deal of information in its 144 pages. What is most informative is that while Zionism was certainly not intrinsically antithetical to the rights of Palestinian people (the work of Theodor Herzl being a case in point) there was from an early point (post initial settlement) a strong Zionist impulse and objective to dispossess the native Palestinian people from their land and culture. The move to Palestinian vilification and a Greater Israel at the expense of its neighbour is not then a relatively recent post 1967 phenomenon. Utilising the leeway afforded by the British Administration Pappรฉ argues that by the 1920s "the Zionism movement shifted from simply seeking to achieve a homeland where Jews would be safe, dependent on the mercy of greater imperial powers, to colonising Palestine in its own right, brazenly dispossessing the indigenous population. And moreover, it began to see dispossession as necessary for obtaining that homeland." (24). Over some set periods (1948, post '67, the Gaza strip in 2000's), this policy of what Pappรฉ describes as Israel's persistent policy of ethnic cleansing of Palestinians (and some other smaller groups) continued, albeit with some relaxing in the late twentieth century only to only to fully revived. Needless to say, Pappรฉ is a controversial figure in this subject (he left Israel in 2007 after receiving death threats) but I for one found this book broadly convincing, and especially enlightening on the different Zionist impulses before 1948 and also on the catastrophic role of the (often double dealing) British State on the subject. I do think there are areas, even in the scope of a primer, that deserve more treatment: the increased resort to violent resistance toward civilians by Palestinians (which is not to say this is like for like) and greater emphasis on the fault lines of Israeli political opinion. Pappรฉ concludes with a brief sketch on how, on his view a two-state solution is a non-starter and how he hopes for a Israel's governing ideas to have a reset as the only meaningful prospect of a future peace. He is not at all hopeful; let's hope he is wrong. Off the back of this short work I have also ordered Pappรฉ's The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine on the 1948 experience of the Palestinian people.

Excellent! A first class account of current events in Gaza with historical context!
This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the on-going conflict in the Middle East. It is a clear and concise account of the historical background to the current situation in Gaza and the West Bank. It is an excellent starting point to understanding what seems to be a complex subject, but which becomes more easily understood as a result of Ilan Pappe's lucid and straightforward recounting of events. The author displays great courage in swimming against the tide by exposing the cynical & brutal treatment of Palestinians displaced from their homeland by Zionists. He is proof that, despite all the evidence to the contrary in present day Gaza, there are decent Jews with a conscience and concern for justice and the upholding of human rights. I salute Ilan Pappe for his stance and I cannot wait to read more of his books.

Not impartial but fascinating and readable
The author (a unversity lecturer/prof here in England) is an Israeli Jew but before you jump to conclusions his view is that Jews are settler-colonialists and the Palestinians were indeed ethnically cleansed, and very persuasive he is too. And well written and basically just fascinating.

Essential - everyone should read and understand.
Essential reading. A short book of 144 pages, this is a must read for everyone - globally, but especially in the west. Pappe is generous. In the 3rd sentence of the Introduction (page 1) he writes: "On 7th October, roughly 1,200 Israelis - the majority of them civilians - lost their lives...." I would never call adult Israelis "civilians". They are all, but a tiny minority, reservist IDF soldiers. Conscripted at 18, but could be later for students, all Jewish Israeli men serve 36 months and women 24 months. In that time they are trained to be brutal, cruel, indiscriminate, genocidal murderers of anyone who is Palistinian or against the political ideology of Zionism. After their "service" they can be recalled until their 40s. Virtually no Jewish Israelis are innocent civilians. Just keep that in mind and read on.

Very coincise history of the past 100 years
For those of us who are not familiar with how the Middle East situation became as complicated as it is, this book makes a very good summary of the last 100 years. I havenโt read anything else and I cannot make a judgement as to whether this book is sufficiently impartial, but I found it very interesting and would certainly recommend it.

Important to know the history of today's conflict
This book is a must read for everyone. ILAN PAPPE the author is a scholar who know his history. One is moved by the long suffering of the Palestinians. The Jews needed a place to live safely, but to destroy the homes of the indigenous people and killing so many and leave the Palestinians with nowhere to go is so wrong. Please read this wonderful book. Thank you ILAN for writing it..
