c. 640 670 AD. The gold original is decorated with cloisonnรฉ enamel, garnets and a white shell centre. St. Cuthbert entered a monastery at the age of 15. As a Prior he travelled to remote places to spread the Gospel and later became the Prior of Lindisfarne. For many years he was a recluse on Farne Island but the King of Northumberland finally persuaded him to take on the duties of Bishop of Lindisfarne. His solitary life left him in poor health and two years later he died. He was buried in the monastery church but when the Vikings invaded the area 200 years later, the monks were forced to flee and took Cuthbertโs body with them. They finally found a resting place for it at Chester-le-Street, County Durham. Its final resting place is in Durham Cathedral where a mighty canopy hangs over it. Cathedral Treasury, Durham Height and width 64mm. Chain length 24" (60 cm). Review: Four Stars - A1 Review: A beautiful replica! - I received this replica of St Cuthbert's cross very quickly after ordering it. While I'm not a religious person, I am interested in ancient Christian art particularly of the Anglo Saxons and Byzantines. I had walked St Ozwalds way and have been considering St Cuthbert's way, both modern walks in the North East of England in what was Northumbria. I had seen rather poor replicas of this cross on Holy Island but unless I hadn't been in the right shop there, I didn't see this cross by this manufacturer. When I looked on desertcart and saw this, the photo was very impressive and I immediately ordered it. When it arrived, I couldn't believe what a lovely replica it is for the price. I doubt that one could produce a better replica of the original unless it was in solid gold with real garnets, and this would cost a fortune! For anyone wanting a reasonably priced replica of this artefact, I can highly recommend this!
