It appears to be a very thin, coated, dark brown, rolled leather, if I had to guess. It could easily be replaced with a chain or string of any style. The kaleidoscope arrives bubblewrapped, taped, bagged, and in a small plain, white, rough cardboard box, so be prepared to do your own packaging presentation when you buy many as the perfect gift for all your friends and family! Really loving this little brass teleidoscope/kaleidoscope! (1-4)It fits in the palm of my hand, but can also be worn as a necklace or secured to a clothing or backpack loop. (2-3)What fun this is, as you can see by the photos, taken through the lens with a cell phone camera! (5-10)This is a great gift for anyone, but children would benefit from learning the science of optics, and they'd love looking through it at everyday objects. Then there's the added fun of taking photos through the lens!Highly recommend, and I plan to buy more as gifts!

This miniature kaleidoscope has a surprising amount of weight to it, you can tell it is solid brass and I really like that about it. As a kaleidoscope it works fairly well, it is a simple design, just a prism and glass ball, no fun colors or weird designs except what you point it at. It is a little heavy to wear as a pendant, but it is a nice trinket I think to keep in a pocket to act as a unique fidget toy, based more on visual novelty rather than physical fidgetting.
