Great for College
I love this backpack. It is very well-made, tough, and durable. It holds a lot, though I always need more space. Believe me though, it holds enough. There is not a lot of padding for the laptop compartment. It does fit my 15 inch laptop just fine though. Some people have commented about the zipper guards. Yes, they are kind of annoying, but they are there for a purpose! The zippers work fine. I lug around heavy textbooks all day, every day and the bag is holding up fine...no hint of a strap fraying or interior cloth ripping. You can't abuse the bag all the time and expect it to never fall apart, but I feel it would be pretty difficult to damage at least the exterior of this bag. The inner lining I could see getting torn if you are carelessly shoving lots of heavy, jagged items inside. I like the side compartments and the separate zipper compartments are good for keeping items separated and organized. I don't know too much about how water proof this is as I have not "tested" that or been caught in a downpour with the bag. I feel the main purpose for this particular bag is for a student, but it could be used for travel (like any bag could be). It has room for a change of clothes, a pair of shoes, your laptop, some toiletries and a few other personal items. This is a solid, durable, spacious, attractive backpack with a great price point. I would recommend to any student for sure. There are probably better options for hikers and travelers, but you could certainly "get by" with this one for those purposes too. ***Update: I have been using this backpack every day now for two years (both for college and personal use). It has seen heavy use and is still in great condition. All zippers still work well and there is no freeing or tearing on the inside nor outside. I would highly recommend this backpack. It is of great quality and very durable.

High Sierra Swerve Backpack, Grey Plaid, 19x13x7.75-Inch
Buying this backpack was the smartest college purchase I've ever made. As a commuter, I will spend 8 to 12 hours a day on campus, and I need to carry around 3-4 classes worth of books, my uniform and gear for work, my laptop and/or tablet and food for the day. I can fit all of that and more in this fantastic backpack. First, there is a huge pocket at the very back with space for a couple binders and 4 or 5 fat textbooks. There's also a well padded slot for a laptop and a smaller one for a tablet. This has a zipper so you can quickly get out your laptop or tablet. Next, there's a smaller pocket which I use for smaller textbooks and anything else I need to throw in there. Then there's another pocket in front of that! I like to stick my lunch in there because that way it's separate from my books in case anything spills. The smallest pocket is in the very front, and it has space for writing utensils and school supplies, a little slot for smaller odds and ends and a key chain hook. Each side has a cup holder, so I can carry both my water bottle and travel mug. There's also a slot on the left strap which is really handy for keeping my phone accessible. My favorite thing about this backpack is the little pocket at the top between the two large pockets. It's maybe 6 inches deep and I stick pens, headphones, chapstick, gum, my I.D. and other things I use often in there so I can get them quickly. This backpack has made my life so much easier. It's sturdy, good quality, comfortable, well padded, the zippers work well and looks great. I can always find everything so easily. If you want a fantastic quality backpack with plenty of space but that you can keep organized, I would definitely recommend this one. I don't have any complaints!

Very Well Made Backpack
I purchased this backpack for my son, who is in fourth grade. He has only been using it for a few weeks, but so far this backpack is holding up well to his daily abuses. It appears to be very well made and highly durable, you can tell by the look and feel of it. The fabric is thick and sturdy, and it is stitched well throughout. There are tons of compartments in this backpack; both internal and external...there is a place for almost anything you can think of that you would carry with you to school (or elsewhere). There is even a padded compartment where you could easily store a laptop/tablet...or, in our case, planners, folders, and notebooks. The padding secures them and prevents much of the mutilation that would otherwise occur to such items, if left loose in a backpack. I purchased the one with the "black and white print," and wasn't sure how it would look (or feel) in real, but was pleased to see that it looks quite stylish in front and back and was also very comfortable for my son to wear/carry...overall, this backpack was better in appearance, quality, and price than any comparable ones I had seen in the stores and we are very happy with this purchase.

Nice backpack, but large. Wasn't what I was looking for.
I'd like to start off by saying this backpack is very well thought out and while I do think it's high quality and very durable, it just isn't quite the backpack for me. The rugged material is great, the organization is excellent, but it ends up seeming huge even with only a few items in it. This isn't unique to this backpack, and is in fact a trend over the past few years that I'm trying to avoid and just can't seem to. I thought the compression straps would help this, but they didn't do much at all since the pockets aren't included in that and even a package of wet wipes seem to make the pockets bulge. I used this as my pack for under the seat on an airplane and to travel for two weeks around Japan. It technically fit under the seat, but it wasn't very flexible and stuck out a few inches even when mostly empty, eating up all of my leg room for a 13-hour flight. (I'm 5'6" and ANA has a little more leg room than other airlines, so I couldn't imagine this on a US domestic flight.) It would be better used as an overhead item if brought onboard, especially because if it's very full I don't know if it would be able to fit under a seat at all. I do feel like it can withstand pretty much anything, so it still looks brand new after being dragged all over different trains and planes. It was also comfortable to wear. The thick back padding that makes it inflexible DOES make it very comfortable, so I would consider that as a plus for most people. Many of the comments said the zippers were difficult. Mine were totally fine and took no breaking in to open easily. Perhaps they've updated the zippers on more recent backpacks, or only people who got unusually difficult zippers have noticed enough to comment. I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

Great backpack
Love this backpack. Surprisingly lots of storage. Straps are comfortable and easily adjustable. Travels well (can be used as a carry on item). This backpack was with me through high school, college, and my first year of law school before it fell ill with mold (as well as the rest of my apartment so not an issue with the backpack) and I bought the exact same backpack to replace it because it was so good

Sturdy!
This bag is tough! It has held up well so far! My daughter puts it through a lot! Lots of room, well made. Zippers work very well, and back straps are comfy. Overall a very well made backpack!

Great backpack but the mesh bottle holder rips easily.
I bought this backpack after having one from this brand for a long time. I expected it to be sturdy and last for a long time. When I received the backpack I was impressed with it. I figured that it would hold up to use. The body of the backpack has held up but not so much can be said for the mesh pockets for bottles. The mesh netting that is on both sides of the backpack are meant to hold water bottles or the like. Soon after starting to use the pockets, I find that they have ripped. The mesh has ripped and started to unravel. After trying and failing to use elastic string to repair it, I stopped using the one pocket. But soon after using the other pocket, it also rips open. Keep in mind that I am not putting anything but a smooth sided water bottle into the pocket. There isn't anything to catch on the mesh or tear it. There isn't another area to put a water bottle incase of leakage. The fact that the pockets aren't able to be used, takes a lot away from the backpack. It is very frustrating. Now I have to try to find a material that can be put in place of the mesh to make new pockets.
