The unit should be fine on just about anything a house hold appliance can take. Refridgerator/freezer/TV, you should have not problem. Typically an outlet will only offer a total of 15 amps before the breaker will trip, so this unit is fine for you. **Q: How long will I need to leave this item plugged in to get an idea of how much an appliance costs to leave plugged in? thanks!** A: For an appliance that is manually operated (lights, microwave oven, toaster) you measure the power when it is on. This is the KiloWatts it uses. Multiply this value by the number of hours that the appliance is on in a month. Multiply that value by the $ per KWHr charged by your power company (around $0.15 is typical) and that will be your cost per month for that appliance. For something that is automatic, like a refrigerator or television, leave it plugged in for a day so you get a time period when door is shut for a while and when it is actively used. Multiply that KW reading by 30 days and then by the $0.15 and that will get you its monthly cost. **Q: Plugged unit into an outlet and then plugged a lamp into device. Nothing happens. Screen is blank and none of the buttons appear to do anything?** A: Since you normally use this outlet with a lamp, my guess is that it is controled by a wall switch. Make sure the lamp works before plugging in the meter in the same outlet. Flip the wall switch if one controls the outlet. If the outlet is working the lamp will turn on. If it does not, then you probably have a blown fuse/breaker..If the meter still fails you have a bad meter. Try the meter in any known working outlet. It works once you figure it out. SURELY there is someone in China they could have hired to translate the instructions into English!! They'll drive you nuts.Pro: Good price. It works with same data as more expensive units. Holds the readings when you unplug it.Not quite a Con: 1. If plug was 1/4" lower, the other outlet on your wall plate would be easily accessible. A flat lamp-type plug will fit, but nothing else. 2. The screen you enter your cost/KWH on doesn't do much else; your total cost shows up on the Watts screen. It says Cost though.Con: 1. REALLY needs a back light of some sort. A higher contrast display might help, but that is not adjustable. I use a flashlight. 2. Instructions say it reads in Euros. (Why would Chinese use Euros??) Actually, it reads in decimals, so it really doesn't matter what currency you use. 3. Needs to allow input to .000 instead of .00 in currency. E.g., my cost per KWH is .1271; I can only input .12 or .13 (rounded up). Not a big deal, but over an extended period it's off a bit. 4. Instructions are so lost in pigeon-English, the best you get is some idea of what they are talking about. Then you are on your own.This really let me know that things like my network UPS backup is only costing $ .20 a day; my router is only $.04 a day. I'm happy.Contrary to other complaints that it rolls over every 10 hours, mine goes to 23:59 hours and adds days.The instructions would have you believe that the timer (restarts if you unplug it to read it and replug it. DON'T do that!) reads minutes and seconds until it reaches an hour, then reads hours and minutes. It is only at 00:00 display rather than HH:MM:SS.The fact is that mine reads seconds through 59. Then it rolls to minutes:seconds, but the seconds no longer increment. So you then only see minutes and :00. The minutes then increment until you reach an hour. I used it to find out about power consumption of 120V appliances, the most important being the refrigerator. It worked great. It is easy to use. I used all the features with the exception of the cost feature. With the cost feature you can program in the cost of a kilowatt hour and it will calculate how much money you spend to run the tested appliance. The only downside to the whole thing is the instruction sheet could have been a little better written. ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Works effectively, but poor controls, and display refuses to display on AC when battery fails *by W***L on Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2017* It appears to measure accurately, and the display is pretty good. As others have stated, the manual is pretty awful, and setting the cost per kilowatt hour is a pain, so I'm deducting one star for poor interface/controls.The other issue is that after three years of ownership, the battery died and wouldn't recharge. When the battery dies, the display is very faint or doesn't work at all, despite being connected to AC wall power. It's a 3.6V 20mAh three-cell rechargeable soldered onto the board. In the attached photo, I've desoldered it with some difficulty (taking care to discharge the capacitors first), and the display is sharp and high contrast now. No battery backup, though.
