Most of the negative reviews are likely not deserved. Not perfect, but worth 4.5 Stars
I've used this sprayer, including its Gilmour predecessor (apparently Gilmour sold this sprayer to Chapin a few years back) for the last 7 years to spray weeds on my 2-acre property. I'd previously used the Ortho Dial-a-Spray, but it was quite "leaky" and the settings were not well calibrated. When I'm searching for a product, I pay particular attention to the negative reviews... as they are often not legit, including this sprayer. So.... I decided to comment on the following concerns about it not working well. 1. "Doesn't spray 30 feet". Of course not with the deflector attached. Common sense. Remove the deflector and you can spray a stream... maybe 30 feet... depending upon your water pressure. 2. "Leaks all over the place". There are 4 places that could be "not tightened enough" and would cause leakage. Make sure those are all tight and try again. This sprayer might leak a bit also, but not as bad as the Ortho. I always wear nitrile gloves when spraying. 3. "Doesn't syphon". Sprayer works on the Bernoulli Principle. Meaning, "it HAS to work... if the system is in working order"... there are no moving parts....fundamental principle of fluid dynamics. (If curious, you can look up The Benoulli Principle.) 2, places which can cause the syphon function not to work. 1. Syphon tube. It could be blocked at the bottom from debris or if the chemicals have acted together to form a bit of coagulation... which collects on the screen and prevents fluid moving up the tube. The tube may not be properly seated in the receptacle at the sprayer head, or there may possibly be a crack in the tube. 2. The "selector wheel". The wheel has a calibrated hole for each setting. It must be centered to work properly. The wheel centering can be just a bit off causing the sprayer to not work. The tiny hole in the wheel can also get plugged with debris and stop it working... happened to me once, though I can't imagine how dirt got into that tiny hole. To be sure you're getting proper operation, suggest including a "dye marker" in your chemical. I use a blue one. The dye will indicate whether the syphon is working or not. When you 1st start your spray, make sure the output includes the marker and adjust the wheel a tiny bit as necessary. 4. Flushing after use is essential. If the pathway gets gunked-up with dried chemical, it may be impossible to "un-gunk" because you won't be able to reach the clog. 5. "Another thing is the "pilot hole(??)" in the metering dial. It can shoot water out the hole.... caused by either/both (a) shaking the sprayer up and down as you spray, and (2) air in the water line. Solution... don't shake the sprayer up and down, and purge the hose of air before attaching the sprayer.

Does what it is supposed to do.
I bought this sprayer mainly for feeding and watering my garden. So far I have used some fish emulsion and it had no problem dispensing it. I also use it as a water-only sprayer and it works very well for that purpose. Mine doesn't have a single leak, so I am not forced to wear gloves. When I unpacked the sprayer I set the delivery dial one setting below 10 and have not moved it since; although that may become necessary as the season moves along and my fertilizing involves mixtures instead of a single item. One issue I have noticed is that the plastic locking nut that holds the jar lid to the sprayer comes loose at times and the jar falls off. I simply pay attention and snug it up when the jar gets loose, and the problem is solved; at least for the time being: I can't say what will become of it over a long period of time. I would be more impressed if more metal had been used in its construction, especially for the price; but so far it works, and works well. I guess it would be unfair to ask any more of it.

Dangerous Design: Bottle Detaches and Falls During Usekkbjkbkjkvkvbkk in jvkjkj
Initial Performance On paper, this sprayer has all the right specsโa brass mixing head, 16 different ratios, and a large 32oz tank. For the first few minutes, it seemed to work well, and the siphoning action was consistent. The "fine-mist" coverage was exactly what I needed for applying moss killer to my roof. โMechanical Failure & Safety Issue The design of the bottle-to-head connection is a disaster. While I was at the top of an 8-foot ladder, the bottle completely detached from the brass assembly and fell to the ground. There is a brass attachment inside that is supposed to secure the bottle, but it doesn't actually "lock." It relies on being just flared enough to stay seated, but under the weight of a full 32oz tank and the motion of spraying, it fails. โUsability Problems Because the bottle won't stay attached, you are forced to use two handsโone on the trigger and one holding the bottle in place. This is not only ridiculous for a "professional" tool, but it's dangerous if you are on a ladder and need a hand free for balance. Losing expensive concentrate all over the sidewalk because of a loose connection is unacceptable. โBuild Quality Warning While the head is made of brass, the points where it interacts with the poly tank are poorly engineered. I checked for loose parts or user error, but the issue is simply that there isn't enough of a mechanical "catch" to keep the bottle secure. I would highly recommend looking for a different model that uses a threaded or reinforced locking collar. โFinal Summary I cannot recommend this sprayer. Despite the "Deluxe Professional" branding, the risk of the tank falling off makes it nearly unusable for real-world projects. If you're doing anything other than standing on flat ground with both hands on the unit, this sprayer is a liability.

Good Sprayer -- trees and shrubs alike
This sprayer is perfect for spraying trees. I had to replace a vintage Ortho tree sprayer and after much research, this Chapin works well. I've sprayed 30 foot trees from ground level for insects (bagworms, beetles, etc). I found that he trick to get to the top of the trees is to wave the sprayer back and forth a little like rain to get way up, but I was able to cover it all. I had to call Chapin's customer service to ask how to remove the black fan tip (which was missing in the instructions) and they told me that it is supposed to be tight, but use needle nose pliers - just pull straight off. Then you can get the straight spray to reach the height of the trees. The fan tip also works well to cover lower shrubs or, in my case the sides of cypress trees. The bottle swivels as you turn the handle so that the liquids are always vertical and the coated handle is comfortable. Chapin also has good customer service dept if you have any questions or problems.

Poor Design
Just used this sprayer for the first time - and a lot of components needed to be tightened before use, and after use. It is very awkward to use - certainly a "professional" would not use this. It seems to be cobbled together with hose nozzle parts making it very awkward to hold and control - the valve should be more easily operated rather than trying to squeeze the vertical nozzle type grip (apparrently adapted from a regular hose nozzle.) I was spraying a vole repellent, which is fairly thick - and I'm not sure how much really got sprayed. Afterward i filled the resevoir jar with just water and it seemed to do fine with that - maybe it just doens't like anything thicker than water. It seems that the manufacturer wanted to adapt standard hose nozzle parts instead of creating a functional design. If I had it to do over again I would have just purchased another all plastic Ortho hose end prayer as it is far more ergonomically designed and seems to actually spray better.. I don't think this one actually sprayed 2T per gallon of water - appears far less was actually applied.

This sprayer/mixer is excellent and well rounded.
Great design, it's simple and very well built while ergonomic. Besides there not being a floating nut for connecting to water line with a filled tank set up, for the upcharge that would have been a nice upgrade. The handle is similar to what you'd find in a restaurant's kitchen knives, durable and easy to clean. The spray trigger controls on/off with perfection and a short actuation, which is adjustable but it came out of the box how I prefer. Sprayer nozzle is not meant to be separated on a regular basis. I'd imagine those teeth will break off quickly due to them being chewed up out of the box. I am on a well with a seasoned pump. I get an easy 20 foot spray without the spoon and it takes half an hour to drain the tank for cleaning. This sprayer/mixer is excellent and well rounded. It's got my confidence that this is the only sprayer I will ever need to have bought.

Great sprayer
This was to replace a cheaper model that fell apart. This one is much better and makes using liquid fertiliser a breeze.

Good
Basically the same as the hortex sprayer except with a larger capacity. Almost double capacity in fact. Plumbers thread tape will come in handy for the hose connector.

Not happy
I bought one. It worked for a few weeks but then stopped actually drawing up the liquid fertiliser out of the bottle so only water from the hose was coming out. I returned it and got another one delivered, which was great, however, this time I am having exactly the same problem. The product does not work with diluted fertilisers

The Australian hose attachment fitting is not compatible with this product.
This is a great product except that in Australia the fitting needed to attach the hose is not quite the correct size, I'm guessing because of the difference between American and Australian measurements, but using teflon tape has stopped it leaking quite so badly.

Better than the English version
Double the size of the the English version. I would buy it again
