Review: Excellent in Every Respect - This little book is the "best of the best" when it comes to helping one learn how to think about investing in high quality companies that compound value for long periods of time. I have great respect for all writers who truly have something of value to share, and this is a prime example. Investing has been one of my lifelong passions and I have managed our family office for over 30 years. Our investment objectives are preservation of wealth, maintenance of purchasing power, and protection against currency devaluation. I have written investing manuals with links to spreadsheet models for my grandchildren on various aspects of investing. The enables them to learn by doing. The book fits in nicely and supplements my emphasis on investing in good quality companies. It's hard to think of much to add to the other comments about the merits of this book. Based on my decades long investing experience, investing in high quality compounders has paid off. That's the good news. The bad news is that most of my investments have such huge unrealized gains that I'm virtually locked into holding them until they get a step-up in basis in my estate. In many cases, the dividends exceed my adjusted basis, and the yield on cost is astronomical. Also, with some notable exceptions, the compound rates of growth have declined. There are some much better compounders to consider, and they are on our buy list for new money. I would like to reply to the person who was critical that the book didn't include much on valuation. Please read chapter 5 and consider the context carefully. Otherwise, you are missing an important point of the focus of this book. Then read "Valuation" 7th edition by McKinsey & Company if you want the best book on valuation, understand accounting, have access to high quality accounting data and are proficient in Excel. In my opinion, valuation is the most challenging part of investing, and the competition is overwhelming. Reading "How to Win the Looser's Game" by Charlie Ellis will provide a dose of reality and enhance your appreciation for "The Art of Quality Investing".
Review: Fill your portfolio with beautiful and magnificent queens - not lowly pawns or stodgy kings! - I finished reading "The Art of Quality Investing" by Pieter Slegers, Luc Kroeze, and Compounding Quality during my time at the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting. This book was a delight to read! Quality is an elusive description. Everyone has their own definition of it and everyone looks for it in everything they come in contact with. We want high quality shoes 👟 that won't hurt our feet, high quality kitchen knives 🔪 that won't go dull quickly, and a high-quality automobile 🚗 that won't leave us stranded on a long road trip. It's hard to define quality sometimes but we all know it when we see it. That's why we oftentimes pay high money values for shoes, knives, and automobiles. We want high quality goods! 💎 If we look for quality in our daily life wares, then wouldn't it make sense to look for high quality businesses to invest in as well? 🙂 The book describes the qualitative and quantitative characteristics and features of high-quality businesses. 💪 Consider qualitative characteristics such as global operations, sustainable competitive advantages, excellent management, and being fairly immune to disruption. On the quantitative side, the business would have a track record of growth, high return on invested capital, and a strong balance sheet. Filtering all stocks available in the world with these characteristics brings the investable universe down to a very small number of options. From there it's a matter of valuation and determining a fair price. That doesn't mean quality stocks are immune to crashes 📉 but they will probably crash less and recover faster 📈 than lower quality companies. The book reads in an easy to understand, conversational tone. Think of it as a checklist in book form. Hey, if I could understand it then anyone can understand it! 😄 There is wonderful chess analogy in the book. Think of all the chess pieces: pawn, rook, knight, bishop, king, and queen. The queen 👑 is the most powerful of all these pieces. She can move in any direction, any number of squares! We should have a portfolio of beautiful queens - not lowly pawns or muddy knights or stodgy kings. I have some queens in my portfolio, but I also have some knights, bishops, and rooks. And, I admit I have some pawns too. My entry into the market in late March 2020 promoted some pawns into queens, but some are still pawns. In many ways, I was more lucky than smart. It's time to cull and rearrange the board toward my favor. It's time to get smart! 👈 Or, at least smarter! 😉 How about you? What's in your portfolio? Pawns? Rooks? Or queens? 🤔
