โI used to drink,โ writes John Bradshaw, โto solve the problems caused by drinking. The more I drank to relieve my shame-based loneliness and hurt, the more I felt ashamed.โ Shame is the motivator behind our toxic behaviors: the compulsion, co-dependency, addiction and drive to superachieve that breaks down the family and destroys personal lives. This book has helped millions identify their personal shame, understand the underlying reasons for it, address these root causes and release themselves from the shame that binds them to their past failures. Key Features This is not just a recovery book. Among other things, it is a classic book on identifying and working through unresolved family issues. Includes affirmations, visualizations, inner voice and feeling exercises. Strong supporting studies make this a popular book with counselors and other professionals. Completely updated and revised Review: A pioneering book that still has a great deal to teach us - John Bradshaw's Healing the Shame That Binds You deserves its reputation as one of the classic books on toxic shame. Although some sections reflect the psychological thinking of the 1980s and 1990s, the central message remains remarkably relevant: shame is not simply an emotion - it can become part of a person's identity. When that happens, it quietly shapes relationships, self-worth, perfectionism, addiction, people-pleasing and countless other aspects of life. Bradshaw combines psychology, family systems, attachment, recovery work and spirituality into a practical guide for understanding how toxic shame develops and, more importantly, how it can begin to heal. Not every reader will agree with the later spiritual chapters. Bradshaw writes openly from his own Christian perspective, although he repeatedly acknowledges the broader concept of a Higher Power and encourages readers to understand that in ways consistent with their own beliefs. Those looking for a purely scientific text may find these chapters less convincing. Where the book excels is in its compassion. Bradshaw never treats shame as weakness or failure. Instead, he shows how shame is often an adaptation to early relational wounds. Perhaps the single most memorable idea is this: Since relationships created much of our shame, healthy relationships are also the place where healing happens. Decades later, modern attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology and affect regulation research continue to support much of this insight. A classic that has earned its place. Review: A must read for anybody who grew up in an unstable environment - This book as single handily changed my way of thinking. Extremely eye opening and enriched with real life applications of the content. This is the first book in 15 years that Iโve read cover to cover. (ADHD doesnโt usually allow for me to sit and read but I managed to read 150 pages in an evening which for me is insanely out of character) have recommended this book to every single one of my friends and family. Anyone who has grown up in an unstable environment (even if not explicitly abusive) should read this. Wow.

Compulsory reading
The first half of this book gave me the chills - in a good way. Completely eye-opening. I've read a lot of psychoanalytic books and self-help journals in the past, but here was a condensed and finalised version of all that. It really got me thinking and reflecting on my life and added clarity where there was only vague fuzziness before. I even stopped dating for a while as it really shocked me into changing and considering my motives in life. I was so excited I wanted to go out and preach it. (I didn't because that is not cool). Although I did then order a 2nd copy to give to a friend. (Not sure if that was well received or even read). I believe someone wise advised helping people who didn't ask for help. I was then looking forward to reading Part Two - 'How to fix it'. Ah... mmm... it all got a bit too 12-step programme and 'higher power' for my liking. That's not to say the suggestions aren't valid, and Bradshaw makes pains to point out that Higher Power can mean anything personal to you, but it jarred with me. But wow! - the first half. I would go as far to say this should be made compulsory reading.

This book is excellent, from the very first page i felt for ...
This book is excellent, from the very first page i felt for the first time in my life someone understood how i felt.It can be a little hard to understand at times but that is because it is not a basic book and it deals with very deep seated problems not surface issues. I felt astounded that some individuals can only give it 1 or 2 stars. They clearly have never felt as the book describes. hence the very negative remarks and have only simple issues, they should be reading something that deals with only emotional problems and they probably would get more benefit from reading books on CBT. This book is for people who need more than CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy), people whose issues are deeper and are more life controlling. This book was the book that started me on the road to healing myself and i am so grateful that i happened to stumble upon it, it was serendipitous. If you only have simple emotional issues and are able to use CBT to help you then this book is most definitely not for you as the book is for issues deeper than that. However if you feel the binding shame that seems to control your life then this book is for you and i cannot recommend it highly enough

Potentially life changing
Iโm about 50 pages in and itโs absolute gold. If youโre thinking it might be relevant to you, buy it. Itโs taking an age to read as nearly every sentence is thought provoking and Iโm reflecting a lot as I go through it. Itโs already completely reframed how I think about why I am the way I am, and the experiences I had as a child. It has the potential to be life changing for me. No other self help book has struck a chord in anywhere near the same degree as this.

whilst good to recognise
An interesting book, that helped me address certain things. However also goes heavily into the religious aspects of shame that i wasn't sure was relevant to me. Also there is an undercurrent of parental blame that, whilst good to recognise, is important to move on from. As with any of these books, certain chapters are more personally relevant than others. But as a good stepping stone to address areas of shame, it has much to offer.

A life changing treasure.
I divide my life into two chapters: before and after I read this book. I had always been a shame-bound person until I read 'Healing the Shame'. Bradshaw's book opened up a new way of thinking and kicked off a beautiful emotional journey. "Healthy shame is the permission to be human. To be human is to be essentially limited. It is to be finite, needy and prone to mistakes... Through healthy shame we rejoin the human race; we accept our need for community and the essential limitations of our human reality. Scott Peck once defined emotional illness as avoiding relating at any cost, and mental health as accepting reality at any cost." I will certainly re-visit this book again and again. - I am conscious that I sometimes shame others as a way to counter my own shame. I make strong efforts to stop this now.

I canโt say enough about how much I loved this book.
If you are on a journey of inner healing, seeking to better understand your emotional history and the experiences that shaped you in childhood and beyond, this book is an incredible resource. It helps uncover the roots of present day struggles and shines a light on patterns that often go unnoticed. What I appreciated most is how it gives language to subtle yet profoundly important concepts that are essential for genuine healing, self awareness, and personal growth. Time and again, I found myself recognizing truths that I had felt but never been able to fully articulate. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is insightful, compassionate, and truly transformative.

A powerful resource for anyone working through emotional wounds, recovery, or personal growth.
My counselor recommended this book and I have found it to be deeply insightful and thought-provoking. It helps explain how toxic shame can affect a person's identity, relationships, and emotional health. This book has offered me a great deal of hope and practical insight for healing and self-awareness.
