Got this kit so I could try making my own gummy candies for the first time. First off, they send you two packets: mango and watermelon. The mango one has artificial flavors, artificial colors, and bovine gelatin. The watermelon has natural flavors, natural color, and just plain gelatin (bovine or porcine, they don't say). I don't knowingly ingest cow products, so haven't used the mango packet. But I did use the watermelon one. The flavor is not that great. It tastes weird and chemically, not sweet and sugary like a good gummy candy should be. Directions on the box of silicone molds and the package of flavored gelatin mix both say in Step 5 to add your infusion, extract or oil into the mix. Huh? Their mix is already flavored. I guess they want you to flavor it more? I don't know, but they don't tell you how much to add or how much would be too much and would negatively affect the setting of the gummies. I put in two tablespoons of hibiscus juice that I was turning into jam. Hibiscus juice is sweet and tart, but it really didn't help the flavor of these gummies. Now, they provide you with two identical molds. Each one will make 15 gummies, and the set of two trays will make 30 gummies that are 10ml each. I filled each one to the tippy top, and had exactly the right amount with maybe a teaspoon leave over. The molds have no directions whatsoever on how to use them. I chose to put the lids on after they were filled because you could hold them by the edge of the lids (which snap on and tuck over the rim of the molds). Otherwise you have no way to pick up the molds without bending them and/or spilling the contents. If you are not going to use the lids, then put your molds on a stiff tray so that once they're filled with the liquid gummies, you can move them easily into your refrigerator or other place to set. I also don't get the square thing on the top of each mold's lid. It comes off and then leaves a small hole, like a breathing hole. After I put my gummy molds in the frig, I removed the square thing so that any moisture or steam from the warm gummy liquid could come out of the mold vs. settling on the lid (like steam would) and then dripping down into the candies. The texture of the gummies is gummy-ish, but it's more like a stretchy gummy, sort of like a super stiff jelly jiggler (jello that's made with less water than recommended so they get nice and firm and can be picked up in your hand). Right now I am seeing if I leave them out at room temp will they dry out and get smaller and firmer, more like commercial gummy candies. After they've air dried for a bit, if you roll them in powdered sugar it should make them easier to handle and not be so sticky. I tried putting them in my dehydrator, but that was a complete mess. Even at the lowest setting it was too hot, and it melted them. I'm glad I got this kit FOR THE MOLDS and the experience, but that's about it. I have since looked up recipes on how to make homemade gummy candies and will try those later this week. The molds, btw, give you candies that are about twice as big as commercial candy gummies.
