Red Heart Granny Square Crochet Yarn, Aran-Soft Sky, 3-Pack

I'm new to crocheting and this was only my second real project. After acquiring this yarn, I read and watched enough reviews of the granny square yarn from people who apparently know what that they're doing that I decided it was probably going to end in frustration if I tried to use it "properly." The reviews were pretty consistent about saying that there's usually a lot of frogging and re-working involved to get the colors to end exactly as they're supposed to when you're trying to use it for making granny squares. So, I just used it to make an simple double-crochet afghan. And I have to admit that I was a little disappointed to learn, as I used the yarn, that the five colors repeat in exactly the same pattern, with the same amount of each throughout. I had hoped that there'd be some variation so that if you were using it for granny squares, the resulting squares wouldn't have to be all identical. But whatever. As for using the yarn as I did for my project: I liked it. I LOVE the colors (actually had a hard time choosing which colorway to get because I think most of them are gorgeous). I found the yarn easy to handle, very little splitting (taking into account that I don't really know what I'm doing yet), makes a nice, fairly soft, stretchy stitch. I would buy it again. My understanding is that acrylic isn't super-soft and I'd say this is NOT super-soft -- probably wouldn't want to wear it as a sweater against my bare skin -- but it's actually pretty nice for an afghan. I did notice that some colors within the colorway some of the colors were consistently more or less bulky or thin than others. I have no idea how the stuff is put together, but it seemed like there were points where I could even see where one color had been attached to the other. I didn't see this as a problem -- changing colors is going to result in joins and they're not always invisible. I'm learning to crochet as a way to relax and just enjoy creating stuff, so I'm not so serious about it that an occasional imperfection in the yarn is going to ruin my project. I actually find a bit of variability and imperfection to add interest to the project. Anyway, as a beginner, I really find no fault with this yarn, for the purposes that I used it for. I very much like the afghan that I made, as does my cat -- had to pry it out from under her, in fact, in order to take the photos (please excuse the cat hair). I doubt that if I do get into making granny squares that I would purchase this yarn for that purpose. I think I'd rather have the control of making a variety of variations on a given color theme, rather than a whole bunch of absolutely identical squares. But I would purchase this yarn again (as well as other "styles" of Red Heart's product line) with no reservations.

Like another reviewer said, rather than making granny squares, I am using this to make a large double-crochet blanket, and it's just perfect! I love the changes of color that make random stripes. I was going to make it all in Soft Sky, but was limited in how many packages I could buy (??!!), so I chose a second colorway that went well with it - Cream - and am alternating them. I'm using a Prym 6 mm hook, slightly larger than the recommended 5.5 mm hook, and it works like a charm. Very occasional splitting on a stitch or two, but I just frog it, smooth the yarn out, and do it again. As with all 100% acrylic, there's a tiny bit of shedding that might make you sneeze, but nothing terrible. It's a lovely weight that's great for cool-weather blanket; it's soft once it's stitched up, and I haven't run into any knots yet. If I do, I'll just snip it, treat it as a color change, and weave the ends in. Big deal. Just because it says "Granny Square" doesn't mean you have to use it for that; ditto for any yarn that is supposed to make a specific pattern, like quilt or heart. Try making an afghan or sweater or anything else and see what you get. Happy stitching!

I love this yarn! I didn't use it as a granny square, I made the 6 day star blanket with I believe 5 skeins of yarn, and I used the rest to make flower coasters and a little basket. The blanket isn't very soft, but no pilling, very way to use, no splitting, not a lot of factory knots, stable. I recommend. I couldn't figure out how to use it with the granny squares and I dislike this for something like a horizontal pattern like a sweater but the star blanket looks very pretty!

I'm not using it for granny squares but it's versatile and easy to work up. The color is vibrant. Really enjoyable to crochet with. I made some dog hats with it.

The yarn is fine-but do not get this if you’re not a patient crocheter and if you don’t enjoy a challenge. Color changes are not consistent within each square-but are consistently off from square to square. IYKYK! I suggest watching multiple tutorials and reviews for this product and keep track of what works for you. For example-first two colors may need to be done with a somewhat looser tension, the next with a more normal tension, and the last two may need a tighter tension to make the color changes in the right place. I suggest cutting the yarn at the end of each square at the point where the first color starts and adjusting back to make it work out. Don’t continue into the next color hoping it will work out. It will get worse. Either adjust tension as necessary or change hook size to make the color changes work. Once you figure it out, you’ll like the results.

Love this yarn color variegation. It uses my favorite colors, orange and blue. I made some cute crochet sleeves for my denim jacket redesign. Love how it turned out! The sleeves are soft and durable.

I love this yarns for its colors and texture. I used one and the other two I save it for another time. I like it and especially it's colors.

Does what is says, you have to keep your tension level but it’s great yarn and saves all those weaving in ends moments. Be sure to take a look at the u tube videos to get the perfect granny square
