What are the blades made out of? Plastic or metal?

Metal, but, if you can get an extra set, do so. We couldn't get in touch with the company to order more. Also the motorhousing is plastic. Be ware, if a rock gets in with the leaves, the blades break and the plastic attachments break. Our motor quit after a few hours use along with broken blades when a renegade rock got in.
