This is by design. I know this now because I have both the Monarch 5 12x42 and the Monarch 7 8x42. The 7 has a much larger front eye piece diameter and it turns out the rain cap from the 5 12x42 fits better and more snugly on the 7 8x42. The product shown here fits likewise snugly well on the Monarch 5 12x42 but it is too small on the Monarch 7 8x42. It will still work if you carefully align the lip and use a fit of force. If you have been following me so far, that means that I only needed to buy 1 of this product to swap all my rain caps to different binoculars and toss the oversized rain cap that comes with the Nikon Monarch 5 8x42.
