Bilge pump can't be near bilge
I am a recreational boater and bought this as a "gulper" pump, capable of passing bits of bait and other stuff that ends up in the bilge. My mistake for assuming a bilge pump could be mounted close to (not even in) the bilge. My Arima has a solid deck with an area in the stern for the gas tank that is a couple inches above the bilge. I hooked this pump up with an automatic switch that took care of the water and gunk before rising to the level of the pump. I didn't account for the water that accumulated during a rain. Long story short, the water rose to the bottom of the pump and that was the end of the pump.Make sure you look for the word "submersible" if you are looking for a bilge pump, or mount this thing in a covered area away from potential rain or other water, high enough that it will not get wet.

Pump motor is not sealed at all.
Can not be in the rain. This pump is described as salt water rated. It pumps salt water but the motor is not sealed so it will fail the first time it rains on your boat. To use this pump it must be inside out of the weather.I mounted it on my boat and it failed before I ever took the boat out (after a rain). They replaced the pump (slow to do so). The next pump worked fine while fishing but then failed after the next rain. I took the motor apart and it was obvious that water had entered the motor. The motor case was not sealed at all.
