In 1985, Pope John Paul II initiated World Youth Day, a worldwide encounter with the Pope for young people that draws millions across continents (3.7 million people attended the most recent WYD in Brazil in 2013). In 2016, the event will be held in Kraków, Poland, birthplace of its founder, newly canonized Saint Pope John Paul II. George Weigel, the preeminent biographer of John Paul II, now presents a spiritual travelogue that further illuminates the life and homeland of one of the most influential Catholic leaders of all time.

I had expected more
As a devotee of John Paul II, a friend of Poland and an admiror of George Weigel, it is obvious that I had to buy this book and I can not dislike it. Still... well I'm sorry to say, but I'm a bit chilled. I'm not impressed by the photos (my own of Krakow, taken with my modest cheap camera, I like more). The text,.. well it's all right. I still recomment it for all John Paul devotees, an for those going to the WYD. But I guess they won't be thrilled, they will say "it' s Ok". George Weigel started his career knowing little about marketing (as he himself said); now I wonder if he is not getting too much an expert on it...

Another wonderful book from George Weigel
A great book, as one would expect from Mr. Weigel. He provides some great insights based on his experience of both the city and it's most famous bishop.

One of the great miracles of modern times was the overcoming of totalitarian ...
George Weigel and team provides rich commentary on the places and names that figured prominently in his previous biographical writings of Saint Pope John Paul II. This book dives deep into points not fully elaborated even in the 1000+ pages of biographical material that author GW has already published on JPII.Vignettes of Polish history and places are made vivid and their importance is illustrated and accented. One of the great miracles of modern times was the overcoming of totalitarian communism in Poland and Europe. The Catholic Church in Poland was a major influence in resisting the twin twentieth century totalitarian regimes of Nazism and communism in Poland. Both were overcome. Evil was overcome with good.Rich photographs highlight the rich historical profiles of places insightfully described and narrated upon.In a our modern times and culture, we live in an age of sceptics, scorners and doubters but heroes have walked among humanity and made powerful impacts for the good of humanity via principle, faith, courage, patience and perseverance. Some of those heroes are described here. Kraków has a rich history and culture and set of places to remember the past and vibrantly live the present.Quoting: In 1596, Giovani Paolo Mucante, master of ceremonies to the papal legate Cardinal Henrico Gaetano, wrote: "If there were no Rome, Kraków would be Rome" - a tribute to the denseness of the city's Catholicism, with its many churches, its abundance of the tombs of the canonized or beatified, and its rich array of religious communities: Dominicans, Norbertines, Franciscans, Jesuits, Paulines, Benedictines, Camaldolese, Carmelites, Felicians and Cistercians, to name but a few.Read, study, enjoy.Note: World Youth Day is scheduled be held in Kraków, Poland during 25-31 July 2016. This book can prepare you for a visit to Kraków anytime and show you much more than you are likely to see in person on a single trip. For author GW's own updated comments on this item, please see: http://www.catholicworldreport.com/Blog/4360/John_Paul_IIs_beloved_Krakw.aspx

Life of the spirit survives horrific occupations.
This book is a wonderful preparation for a visit to Kraków. Even if you can’t visit, it is so informative about this beautiful city and it’s history. And, if you are Catholic and a fan of Pope John Paul II, you will love it even more. I have visited Kraków five times.
