Novak is an urban witch, she runs a stylish store accompanied by her gorgeous cat Pyewacket. Stewart, a publisher, stumbles into her life after renting a room upstairs. The film follows their bumpy romance and their relationship is beautifully complemented, and complicated, by Jack Lemmon, playing Novak's brother and Elsa Lanchester as her somewhat 'dotty' aunt.The film sometimes is a little flat, the script could have done with more work but the costumes, setting, the whole look and feel of the film are so stylish and seductive that it doesn't seem to matter. Loved it. Would also make a great Halloween film for those who prefer elegance and charm to gross-out horror or violence. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ You cannot not watch any James Steward film! *by P***N on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 April 2017* No matter what the storyline you can't go wrong with these films. The actors and actresses always brought something new to the table. You can hear what they are saying, there is always a joke element as they were their characters were well known from newspapers or the little news we sometimes had. Anyone involved from the call boy to the scriptwriter worked together and we will never see the likes of this sort of thing again. We rarely saw or knew about the background arguments and problems and the film industry was so tightly controlled you just enjoy your weekly if not nightly flea pit experience, some people went every night and new all the words to a T. Bell, Book and candle was yet another you must watch. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Review for upgrade to Blu ray from DVD only...and its top marks! *by T***E on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 October 2016* I love this movie so much! You never see it on TV or the movie channels. Anyway, I have the DVD already but its very grainy and not great sound on the one I have, so I thought I would try this, for english speaking you just go to the sound menu and select english and you select off for the subtitles and away you go. The quality of picture against my DVD is amazingly better and for an older movie I would say this is really good! Very clear intact and the sound is great. I am really happy that I went for the upgrade and wont look back.
