Uni Mechanical Pencil, Kuru Toga Advance, 0.7mm, Navy (M75591P.9)

At a glance: I have used the original Kuru Toga, the advance, and the dive. I bought this one as a gift. They are well balanced, comfortable in the hand, and you will not find a better option especially at the price point. A deeper look: I’ve been using the Kuru Toga line of mechanical pencils for about four years now, and they have been the most reliable mechanical pencils I’ve owned. I use them daily for work and have never had any issues with the Advance mechanism or the pencil itself. The rotating lead mechanism keeps the lead wearing evenly, which makes a noticeable difference when writing for extended periods. I have to write, in pencil, for most of the day and I can confirm that it stays sharp and produces a consistent line without constantly having to rotate the pencil by hand. After four years of regular use, mine is still working just as well as it did when I bought it. For a mechanical pencil that gets used frequently, that kind of durability is impressive. If you’re looking for a dependable mechanical pencil that you can use every day for years, I’d definitely recommend the Kuru Toga Advance.

Bought this pencil for the feature of the rotating head and spring-loaded clutch to accomplish two things: Keep the graphite orientation uniform, and for the clutch to hold the graphite better as it gets near the end of the stick. For the most part, the consistent line is there... until the graphite stick reaches about the 1/2" remaining mark. From there, the line gets fatter and blurry, regardless of the rotation mechanism. The pencil feels nice in the hand though and behaves better than others I have tried. Just wish mechanical pencils could hold on to the graphite a little longer to not waste so much of the stick. An average stick is 2-3/8" long, so youbstill waste about a fifth if you want nice clean fine lines.

When I first heard of the Uni Kuru Toga, I thought that it sounded like a bit of a gimmick, but I finally decided to give it a try, and I am very glad that I did, because it is definitely not a gimmick. It works smoothly and seamlessly, without negatively affecting writing feel, and does just as it advertises, it keeps your line width consistent, automatically. The Kuru Toga Advance uses the W-Speed mechanism, which rotates the lead twice as far each time you lift the point, which makes it better suited to Latin cursive handwriting than the original Kuru Toga, which is better for Latin manuscript printing or CJKV scripts, since with those, you will lift the point from the paper more often. With Latin cursive handwriting, you tend to write much longer without lifting the point, so have the point rotate faster helps keep it more consistent. The Advance also has a sliding lead sleeve that effective reduces lead breakage, and makes the pencil easier to transport without damaging it. If I have any criticisms at all of the Kuru Toga pencils, it is that I wish they made more of them in 0.7 mm and 0.9 mm lead sizes, because I prefer the thicker leads when I am using color leads—especially the excellent Uni Nano Dia Color 0.7 mm and Uni EMOTT 0.9 mm color leads—and that I wish they made more models with elegant metal barrels, because I prefer a heavier weight in my hand and a premium appearance for my writing instruments.

I like that the weight is not too heavy or too light; it feels great, writes great, always produces sharp, clear letters, and does not produce dull letters. I work a lot with numbers and financials, so having a sharp line and or notes makes it easier. It works great for me.

I enjoy mechanical pencils and these are attractive and very nicely made. Like the rotating lead "self sharpening" feature.
