It numbs the tongue a bit...which it is supposed to do, but this powdered form gives my food a gritty texture. Rather similar to adding fireplace ashes mixed with a bit of sand. I've stopped using it because of the grittiness but also because it added no discernible boost in flavor to my Chinese dishes. Cook's Illustrated mag recommended the Dean & Deluca brand of whole Szechuan Peppercorns as their favorite, but I don't have a store near me.
