i want to use this to hook two 1/2" pipe. is the opening big enough to clip to 1/2" pipe? Thanks in advance.

I think it will be close. Check the outside diameter of your 1/2" pipe. It will vary with the type of pipe you are using. I haven't measured the I.D of the S-Biner.

How does the lever spring shut when there are no springs to activate it? Does it use gravity? How does the lever spring close?

The wire gates are a spring. They are designed to spring closed.

I have the stainless steel model, but can't figure out the way to attach the keys. How can I attach them?

You will need to slide the black clips down to release the lock. Once you have it unlocked you can add your keys.
