The Founding: A Gaunt's Ghosts Omnibus

Outstanding, couldn't put it down.
The Gaunts Ghosts series is legendary for a reason, and the books are a great jumping off point for people new to the universe of Warhammer 40k. These books are intense, well written works of military science fiction, and offer an excellent view of the life of ordinary soldiers and citizens of the 41st millennium. Space Marine books can be a little too grandiose and epic - this is gritty and dark, the action is brutal and fast, and the worlds are hostile and alien.I gave it four stars instead of five for two reasons: one, at least in this first omnibus, the enemy is always Chaos. I understand that this is the primary antagonist in the series, and Necropolis does a good job of shaking things up as far as the enemy being a properly armed hive defense force rather than yet another random chaos cult on some random world, but still. There's a whole universe of stuff to kill out there, guardsman! Second, while there are tons of casualties, named troopers dying left and right, it never really feels like any of the main five characters are ever going to really die. Major plot armor vibes, but again this is just the first omnibus.

Phenomenal introduction to 40K
Great read, inspiring, haunting, breath taking all in one. Great intro to 40k, I highly recommend it. It really gives you the perspective about what the Crusades are from the infantry stand point.

A must read for those new to 40k lore
Have only read the beginning of the omnibus and can tell it is a great for those getting into 40k lore like myself. I will say you will want to read the first few of the Horus Heresy to bring you up to speed with any background history of the universe. But a great intro to the life of the Imperial Gaurd aka the Astra Militarum.

Absolutely phenomenal foray into Warhammer 40k
This was my first Warhmmer 40k book and I absolutely loved it.The characters are well written and immediately likable. Gaunt is a curious character, his "ghosts" stand out as individuals even with the massive army progressions and massively interconnected story lines. If you are new to Warhammer 40,000 and want to get into the lore, this is a great place to start.Gripping, riveting and intense. This book has everything. 10/10

The start of the epic saga for Gaunt’s Ghosts.
The start of the epic saga for Gaunt’s Ghosts as they join the massed Armies of the Imperial Guard to repel an invasion by the forces of Chaos on the Sabbath Worlds. The author Dan Abnett successfully immerses the reader into the W40K Universe.
