Getting them working with the Nvidia Shield is a mixed bag, as some apps will transmit encoded surround over HDMI and others will use PCM or decode the media audio and then transmit PCM. Using the HDMI and an optical cable works fine for the former. But PCM audio is a little trickier. This works as an excellent way to get PCM or decoded surround sound out of the shield and into the speakers. Specifically for game streaming or for Plex or other players that decode the audio. I previously used another USB audio interface but the 9.2 shield update broke the functionality and would only play sound out of the front speakers. Probably because that audio interface was using an ancient chip. This worked right away with zero hassle.
