The soles are made of a synthetic rubber type of material so there is no loud sound as you walk. Yes the grip is good as long as the floor is not wet. **Q: Does this version have the toe grip like the original used to have?** A: It does not, and, for me, there was a noticeable difference. I almost returned them, but remembered I had a pair of Dr. Scholl’s Ball of Foot Pain inserts in another pair of shoes. Tried them with these and I really liked it. This version isn’t clunky loud on a floor surface like the originals, but has more of a cushion feel, which I find to be more comfortable than the wooden soles.
