Experienced professionals will also immensely benefit from this guide as they refine their investment skills. Michael Gatto has twenty-five years of investing experience in the debt markets at Silver Point Capital (a $20 billion credit-focused fund) and Goldman Sachs' Special Situations Group. Furthermore, he is an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School and Fordham University's Gabelli School of Business. Michael brings these experiences together in this comprehensive manual, teaching the skills to succeed in the dynamic and complex credit markets. Michael brings highly complex case studies to life using decades of his first-hand war stories and combines them with reflections from leading industry professionals, often infused with humor, to make the book accessible, readable, and fun. Michael's seven-step credit analysis process will prepare you for a career in credit investing at the top buy-side and sell-side firms on Wall Street by teaching you the technical skills needed to invest in the debt markets. Whether you are analyzing a loan origination in the private debt market, a new issue of a broadly syndicated loan (BSL), a high-yield bond (HY), or a secondary trade, the comprehensive knowledge gained from this book will equip you to make well-founded investment recommendations. Additionally, an entire section devoted to distressed debt investing incorporates a practitioner's perspective on the nuances of bankruptcy and restructurings to develop strategies to profit from opportunities in this opaque market. In clear, straightforward terms accessible to the layperson, Michael explains strategies pursued by distressed companies such as J. Crew and Serta that have led to creditor-on-creditor violence, giving you an insiderโs perspective on some of the least understood transactions in the distressed arena. You will: Gain In-Depth Knowledge: Understand the complexities of credit markets, from trading dynamics to historical credit cycles, allowing you to identify debt investment opportunitiesโand avoid pitfalls. Master the Analytical Framework: Learn Michael's seven-step process for analyzing credit investments, including qualitative industry and business analysis, financial statement analysis, forecasting, corporate valuation, relative value analysis, and debt structuring. Learn How to Write an Investment Recommendation: Review real-life credit memos to understand how analysts translate this framework into recommendations that drive investment decisions at the top credit funds. Discover Key Concepts and Terminology: leveraged buyout financings (LBOs), trading levels (price, yields, and spreads), shorting, and credit default swaps. Navigate Distressed Debt: Explore the strategies and nuances of distressed debt investing, including bankruptcy, subordination, creditor-on-creditor violence, and high-profile case studies from the past three decades of Chapter 11 restructurings. This book caters to finance majors pursuing investing careers, credit analysts seeking to enhance their skills, and seasoned professionals aiming to expand their expertise. Professors, researchers, lawyers, and advisors servicing the credit industry will also find immense value in this comprehensive guide. Review: Excellent Finance Book - Incredibly Detailed - As someone who has started his career in credit and wishes to continue, this was the most helpful finance book I have read by far. I very much wish I could have had access to it when I started working after undergrad. It was smooth like a novel but informed like a dense textbook. Mr. Gatto condenses highly complicated financial topics (bankruptcy, Leverage Buyouts) into an easy and enjoyable read. I found the constant use of real companies and past cases to be quite helpful, and for those of you who enjoy history, the high level of detail on prior distressed scenarios from decades earlier is really fun to explore. The last few chapters are certainly more complicated, but he leads through it methodically without rushing any of his key points. The book does a great job of explaining the nuances on valuation and capital structures through multiple scenarios, so you never are thinking "what if this was the case instead?" Beyond writing a great novel, Mr. Gatto also mentions a plethora of resources and books to help encourage greater learning should something catch your eye. I'm not sure I have ever read a book that endorses so many others as well. Overall, a fantastic read and I can't recommend it enough. Review: A Must-Read Finance Book That Truly Shaped My Internship Experience - I read The Credit Investorโs Handbook this past spring, and it turned out to be one of the most practical and insightful resources Iโve come across. Michael Gatto does an excellent job of distilling complex credit investing concepts into a well-structured book full of clear frameworks, anecdotes, and resources that make the material approachable for students and professionals alike. What stood out most for me was the seven-step credit analysis framework. As a rookie intern, it gave me a systematic and repeatable process for thinking through different types of debt, which made credit analysis far less intimidating. It provided a foundation I could rely on when approaching new situations, and it really sharpened my understanding of how to break down risks and key drivers across credits. Over the summer, I worked on both a leveraged buyout and a debt restructuring alongside creditors, and I kept finding myself returning to lessons from the book. The leveraged buyout helped me appreciate the capital structure dynamics Mr. Gatto lays out, while the restructuring made me realise just how useful his chapters on distressed situations really are. I can honestly say this book made me a stronger intern and left me better prepared for a career in finance. For that, Iโm genuinely grateful, and I highly recommend it to anyone serious about building a foundation in this field. โ H.C.

Highly Recommend -- Engaging Read for Credit Market Professionals of the Future
Leveraged Finance has been a rapidly growing, increasingly important, and ever-evolving asset class, especially over the past two decades, as Gatto illustrates, with roughly $4 trillion in high-yield bonds and leveraged loans outstanding today. This means proficiency in the field of leveraged loans and HY bonds--from issuance, through secondary trading, and into the fascinating world of restructuring--has never been more vital to finance professionals. Gatto also introduces the recently burgeoning field of direct lending in lucid detail. The classic narratives of the once-dominant leveraged finance asset class of high-yield bonds--such as Barbarians at the Gate and Den of Thieves--have long been great intros into the field. But The Credit Investor's Handbook fills a much-needed gap across the past two decades, positioning new practitioners in credit markets, as well as incumbents keen on remaining versatile, well in staying apace of the latest trends and opportunities. The Credit Investor's Handbook is an indispensable read, from one of the industry's foremost leaders, with an engaging survey of the Building Blocks of Leveraged Credit, and the Seven-Step Process of Evaluating a Debt Investment, to an insightful intro into Distressed Debt. Highly readable combination of an academic survey to a boots-on-the-ground narrative, of this crucial and rapidly evolving field in modern finance. Highly recommend!

This is the only book about leveraged finance markets that you will need
I've been following/writing about financial markets for thirty-odd years. The 10Y Treasury was 8% when I started, the S&P 500 was less than 1000. Over time I've come to enjoy monitoring leveraged credit (high yield bonds, leveraged loans, CLOs) the most: correlated to equity, but with a cash flow. And its arena where one will meet the most interesting people and companies. Newcomers need a roadmap, and after three decades reading credit research and fixed income textbooks of various weight (Frank Fabozzi, anyone?) I can say that Prof Gatto's book is absolutely essential for understanding leveraged finance. Gatto has worlds of experience, he writes very well, and he is excellent at explaining how it "works" - that is, the interplay between the income statement, the balance sheet, leverage, security and market prices. There's excellent discussions of emerging trends - that is, the rise of private credit as an alternative to the BSL market. I expect this book will stay on my desk permanently as a reference - along with Stigum's Money Market and Inside the Yield Book. Highly recommended for both newcomers and old campaigners like myself who need a refresh. And it will not overwhelm you if you don't have a MBA. Bond math isn't hugely complicated -- it's not like you are trying to solve the Riemann Hypothesis -- but you need to understand the proper market and industry context. This book will how you how. Highly recommended.

I Wish I Read This Book Before Interviewing!
As a college student aspiring to work in this industry, I found this book fantastic. The author starts with the basics of credit, assuming no prior knowledge, and builds on each concept, providing a comprehensive understanding and PRACTICAL SKILLS. It covers essential concepts often overlooked by other credit books and classes. The book guides readers on building a credit memo, using a major distressed company from the early 2010s as a case study. Real memos help readers understand the process, and career stories build to the final section on distress investing, which makes it even more engaging. The book provides an in-depth, step-by-step guide to understanding the intricacies of bankruptcy proceedings and the strategies for navigating distressed investing. The explanations of these complex topics are the clearest I've encountered, answering my questions and introducing new topics to ponder. The example memos that Gatto provides are one of the most valuable additions. As a college student, I want to learn to think like a distressed investor. While modeling resources are fairly common, they often lack explanations of the reasoning behind the models. These memos effectively bridge that gap, offering a rare and insightful glimpse into the thought process of an investor. I wish I had read this book before interviewing for roles in this field. It would have given me a different mindset, greater knowledge and confidence, and more interesting conversations with industry professionals. Thank you for writing this book!

A Must-Read for Aspiring Credit Analysts and Investors (ESPECIALLY INCOMING INTERNS!!!!!)
The Credit Investorโs Handbook is the most practical, insightful, and well-structured book Iโve read on credit investing. Michael Gatto distills decades of institutional experience into clear frameworks that are both intellectually rigorous and highly actionable. As a student preparing for a summer internship in credit research, I found this book invaluable. It not only sharpened my technical understanding of leveraged loans, high yield bonds, and distressed debtโbut also helped me grasp the broader market context, key risks, and behavioral dynamics that separate good investors from great ones. What sets this book apart is how Gatto blends academic theory with real-world application. His chapter on distressed investing and the nuances of legal structuring was especially eye-opening. Whether you're new to credit or already working in the space, this book will deepen your edge. Highly recommend to anyone serious about a career in credit markets. โ Justin C.

A Definitive Guide to Credit Investing for Structured Finance Professionals
Michael Gattoโs The Credit Investorโs Handbook is an outstanding resource for structured finance professionals looking to deepen their understanding of leveraged loans, high-yield bonds, and distressed debt. Given the increasing convergence between structured finance and private credit, this book provides critical insights that enhance risk assessment, deal structuring, and portfolio management in todayโs evolving credit markets. For structured finance experts accustomed to analyzing cash flows, collateral pools, and tranche mechanics, Gattoโs approach to corporate credit investing is both complementary and enlightening. The sections on distressed debt and restructuring are especially valuable for structured finance practitioners expanding into more opportunistic credit strategies. Gattoโs practical insights into distressed investingโincluding workout negotiations, legal considerations, and downside protectionโoffer a clear roadmap for professionals accustomed to structured deal dynamics but seeking to navigate direct credit risk more effectively. In a market where credit investors must think holisticallyโblending structured finance principles with fundamental credit analysisโThe Credit Investorโs Handbook is an essential read. It bridges the gap between structured products and corporate credit, making it an indispensable resource for those seeking to expand their expertise beyond traditional securitization. Highly recommended for structured finance professionals who want to refine their approach to credit investing and broaden their skill set in an increasingly interconnected market.

A delightful and excellent handbook for any analyst aspiring to get ahead on Wallstreet
I found the Credit Investorโs Handbook to be an enriching experience on multiple fronts: the book traces back the authors career path, highlighting serendipitous moments that propelled his career success, and further delves deeper into the practicalities of credit analysis, citing several practical examples, insightful sample credit memos, and a comprehensive step-by-step guide to analysing credit investment opportunities. The reader is also invited to actively analyse credit investment case studies, applying the lessons learnt from each chapters. The Credit Investorโs Handbook has greatly enhanced my understanding and I regard it as one of the most comprehensive and practical investment text books I have read. Michael Gatto's 7-step process, which he carefully explains in his book, has become my primary tool for assessing credit investment opportunities. I've frequently referred back to it to reinforce my understanding and have applied the acquired knowledge in real investment cases. As a first-year analyst, the book has offered me valuable insights into the nuances of credit and investment analysis, which I believe will be appreciated by my senior colleagues. I've incorporated the principles learned into my daily work, making the book an important resource for the enhancement of my financial analysis skills. To this end, I wholeheartedly recommend the Credit Investorโs Handbook to fellow analysts seeking to elevate their financial analysis proficiency. It not only provides practical knowledge but also serves as a reliable guide for navigating the complexities of credit and investment analysis."

Masterpiece in credit investing and fundamental analysis
The book provides practical insights into the nitty gritty of credit investing. It equips the reader with a structure and guide to analyze any credit opportunity, explaining the key concepts in a simplistic and systematic manner. Additionally, it touches upon the complex topics of distressed investing / insolvency in a lucid manner. Also, this provides a solid foundation for undertaking fundamental analysis on corporate/stocks and equips one in any role which requires the same, i.e., lending, investing, credit rating, to name a few. The key concept explained is universal and the book could be equally relevant for any geographical market. Thanks a lot for authoring this book. Excellent

Best Book on Credit Investing
This book is a must have. It contains an incredible amount of knowledge pills both for anyone starting a career in credit and for more advanced practitioners and investors. The book is very well structured starting from the basics all the way to more complex areas and processes. I particularly enjoyed the practical angle that Michael gives to all of the topics, providing real life examples and case studies from his experience at Silver Point. The key points that fascinate me about the book are the following: - Structure: You can very easily follow the content from the general idea of credit investing towards more detailed and particular points - Applicability: the book provides a good framework on how to approach the credit investment process, in general, and the preparation of a good credit memo, in particular. As a restructuring analyst myself, I can assure the book provides exactly the nuances on which investors typically focus on. I have read other books on credit analysis that are much more academical and less practical - Case Studies: as mentioned above, Michael, very openly, gives specific case studies on his/Silver Point's thought process ahead of investing in different opportunities - Distressed debt chapters are gold: personally, I loved the chapters on distressed investing, as it is Michael's focus area. He clearly explains both financial and legal concepts and provides the strategic thinking on how to limit downside risk when investing in distressed debt All in all, I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about credit and, more specifically, distressed debt investing. I wish it had more pages to keep learning from the author's experience.
