Spear & Jackson 2153AE 16" Tubular Newcastle Shovel

Great spade on my second on .all steel but welded just above the spade part which is a weak spot if you don't look after it. Also the handle is wood and not plastic or fiber glass so again needs looking after. But all that said I am on my second. Invaluable for digging post holes. Digging up bushes etc.

The Spear and Jackson spade is, very well made and strong, so that it will put up with someone working hard with it. I was also pleasantly surprised at the economic cost of it and how soon I received it thank you so much.

Excellent product

My only concern with this (Spear & Jackson 2153AE MYD Tub Never Bend Newcastle, Blue, 16-Inch) item is that even before use, the D handle looks and feels small in the hand, and I would have thought that the Spade itself, would have had a longer shaft and reach, given the length of the tool.

I bought this to remove several deep rooted well established shrubs which I was struggling to dig up. I had done a lot of research and thought this would do the job, which it did. The spade is sharp and a good depth to really get deep down cutting through the roots and allowing you to get underneath the shrub to lift it out. It is stable, and sturdy. This is the best spade I've owned. I can use it again and again saving me a lot of money as I didn't have to pay a professional to remove the shrubs; which I did contemplate as a last resort. I would definitely recommend this product.

I removed shrubs, replanted others and dug holes for posts. Should have bought one years ago. It compliments a standard spade for more precise digging. Excellent price with Sprear & Jackson usual superb quality.

I have used it just once so far. I am a non-gardener, now establishing a sustainable-living operation (probably it will become a One Planet Development in a while) on my land in Wales. I have a lot to learn, but this spade seems to be up to the quality the name Spear and Jackson suggests. I found that it cut into rather waterlogged clayey soil better than I expected. An experienced gardener might have expected this good performance. I am quite pleased to see what seems to be a hard enamel surface all over the blade of the spade - an alternative, I suppose, to the use of stainless steel, easy to clean, and probably giving a tougher product than stainless at the same weight. The makers' claim that it will 'never bend' seems justified, and I found the spade not too heavy for half an hour's work. Many would need to use it for far longer at a time, and I am sure will find it not too heavy for that, so I should explain that I am near eighty years old. Eric Franklin
