Lawrence Alma-Tadema: At Home in Antiquity

Beautiful book. Very thorough articles. The variety of contributors comes together well. The selections of paintings and photos is great. I highly recommend this book for art history people, painters, and for anyone who appreciated beauty and has a coffee table. Wish I could get to the exhibition.

Great reproductions and the inside look of one of the worlds incredible painters.

Comprehensive overview of the artist's work throughout his career from childhood to his knighthood as an icon of 19th century historical art. The main drawback are some of the pictures are too small, in greyscale, or both.

This is an excellent and very informative book, a great addition to a collection of any fan of Alma-Tadema. It goes into more details and presents much more information about the context and the artist than other available books. The book has many full-color images that include Alma-Tadema's paintings, but go well beyond that. But the quality of art presentation in the book is rather weak. Many illustrations are just to small (which helps to include many of them, but makes it a problem to appreciate paintings). Most unfortunate, the quality of printing is relatively poor - including the quality of the paper itself, the quality of reproductions, the colors, the granularity, etc. From the prospect of the printing quality, it is among the worst art books in my collection. Altogether, it looks like a cheap textbook-style production. The book doesn't even have dust jacked. All that is really surprising for a coffee-table sized, hardcover art book, coming from a well-known publisher and focused on an artist who is known for a great level of details in his painting. In this sense, the appearance of the book is somewhat deceiving. It is not your usual coffee table book with great pictures to enjoy the art at pleasure. It is a serious and informative textbook where images are illustrations and somewhat secondary. If you want just one book coffee table book on Alma-Tadema to appreciate the paintings, it is not the right book. Amazon has other great options for Alma-Tadema if what you need is just one nice book.

I was disappointed and plan to return it. The book is smaller than expected, and the illustrations few, incomplete, and of poor print quality. It was overpriced.

This book covered the artist's life and career. It discussed how his domestic life, his studio and his family were intertwined with his work and his journey to reanimate the ancient world. Beautifully illustrated.
