Can I substitute oil or something else for the butter?

I have been told you can use pumpkin in the place of oil it is worth a try. The Betty Crocker mixes are great also. You could try coconut butter.

Would this work with an egg substitute?

Although I have not tried it myself, I believe that a product such as Ener-g Egg Replacer would probably work.  Another option is to substitute 1/4 cup of applesauce for one egg (but replace no more than two eggs or you will effect the structure).  Bear in mind that eggs function in quite a number of ways in a recipe: as an emulsifier, as a leavening agent (either via the egg whites or as a function of its proteins which trap the gases released by baking soda and baking powder and as an ingredient/means to enhance or enrich the crumb and the "mouth feel" of the finished product.  I would suggest purchasing one box and giving it a try.  Bon chance!

Does the yellow cake mix contain any nuts or nut oils?
