For the Record: Report Writing in Law Enforcement

Finally. A book that teaches cops how to write. As an instructor at a law enforcement academy I can tell you most up and coming cops can’t write. In fact most veteran cops can’t either. Save your future (or current) supervisor the pain and suffering of reading and making you correct your crap reports. Buy this book, study it, do the exercises and free up your soup to do other, more important things for you like write a grant for knarley cool gear or training ammo.

Had an employee struggling with report writing issues; this book was part of an employee improvement plan and did make a positive difference in his particular ability to prepare a well written report. Our reports are detailed, investigative oriented with no check box forms. An Officer needs to be able to correctly use the English language to puts his thoughts and actions in a written form. This book helped with several areas, such 1st person versus 3rd person and understanding the present versus past tense. He gained a better understanding of the use of quotations and grammar in general. If you or someone who works for you needs help with reports, this is a good book to utilize. Not the whole answer, but a good tool.

Had to use this for a class assignment. It could be useful if English isn't your first language, or you have a hard time with grammar and clear writing. Considering that most police officers these days have a college degree, I don't see the need for pages and pages of redundant exercises emphasizing 5th grade level English grammar and writing principles. The exercises themselves, aside from being repetitive, don't give enough space to answer for all but the tiniest of handwriting. Basic formatting would go a long way toward making this book less of a slog.This is a 275 page book. It should be a 50 page pamphlet.
