Excellent printer despite Apple Big Sur fiasco
Every time Apple issues sn updated operating system, I've lost use of some software, etc., and with Big Sur my trusty old Brother B&W laser printer would no longer work with my Mac, nor my HP color laser. Our Canon printer / fax / scanner will print but formatting is screwed up big time and output useless. My IT friends say that many printers, new and old, no longer function with Big Sur, not sure if the problem is with Apple or the printer manufacturers or both, or if it will eventually be solved, but I hate to trash a perfectly good and deadly reliable printer for something as ludicrous as this. This new one is also not Big Sur compliant and a print / fax / scan may not run all its functions, but at least this printer has Apple AirPrint built in so printing function works with my Mac.If you bought a new car and no gas station had fuel that would work with it, I think you'd be a bit angry. But I had to solve my printing needs fast. Consumer Reports rates Brother printers as most reliable and highest overall ratings, and I've had great luck with Brother printers (as well as Brother labelers and, to date myself, Brother electric typewriters), a long and good relationship. I got this printer as the "....XL" package, which is the same printer but included as a bundle with two high-capacity laser toner cartridges, the cartridges would cost about $160 if purchased separately, later, but add about $100 above printer-only so a smart buy for a little up-front money. The printer itself was easy to set up. Print quality, very short delay to start printing a first page, and printing speed (pages per minute) are excellent. Paper handling so far has been flawless. Still the problem with drivers for Big Sur, duh, but I can print easily using Apple AirPrint, which my newish Mac computer has and this printer has built in, very smooth. My wife's Windows laptop can connect via WiFi and print without trouble as well. But I'm pretty sure AirPrint will not help with devices that also fax and scan, so still an issue out there.I am still frustrated and angry over no fixes (yet... ??) for Big Sur, and not only for old but with also with brand new printers, most have some words like "...no guarantee of all functions working with Apple Big Sur OS", an extremely dumb situation that falls totally on users, but for now I am back in business (for B&W), still need to solve color printing and a device that works and includes scanning and faxing functions despite Big Sur. This printer is excellent and the "XL" package is cost-efficient, but I still seek longer-term solution for color, scanning, faxing, and finding a good home for my perfectly good but older printers. I loved that when I had Nikon SLR cameras, the old lenses would work with the newest camera bodies, no such thing as obsolescence, the old lenses would not support auto-focus because they lacked the connections and servos but they would still work with metering and take photos. Nice and protects one's investment for a longer period of time. While evaluating what printer or other device to buy, I relied on user reviews at various web sites and (mostly) Consumer Reports, that has worked well. My own experience with Brother was also vindicated, except that when I surfed Brother's site including support for info on any new or "generic" drivers that might play nice with Big Sur, I could not actually reach Support, one keeps circling the site and FAQs and such, which really stinks for customers. HP was the same. They want you to use the website and not have to have human staff or really "support". Every time a company automates service via a website that supposedly can respond to every question and need (but actually cannot), customers take the hit. I just ordered some replacement parts for our Weber grill, and their website offers all the info you need BUT you can also call, chat, or email support and address anything that still puzzles you, which is great and as it should be. I think we may need a customer revolt or boycott to fix this, companies paying a CEO 20+ million dollars a year and making great profits save money by eliminating telephone operators and adequate support functions, it's really a crime. But I like the new printer. Doesn't solve Big Sur for many other aspects, and product support may not be good, but I am printing B&W, and laser (not ink jet, which offers cheap printers but expensive ink and often smearing, ditched all of our ink jets years ago).

Works like a work horse
Fast. Crisp. Flawless operation. Brother has come thru on this one. My boss got one for work...3 people use it. I have sat next to it for 2 years. Hasn't broken or failed us yet. I got one for home. WAY more effective than I will ever need.I am using monochrome because I am only doing letters. I have a Samsung for color work. It is also another amazing machine.Update: October 2019. I stand by my review. I have put hundreds, if not several thousand sheets of paper through this thing and it is still working flawlessly. In my past occupation (I am now retired) I have taken printers out of my office, held them over my head, marched them to the dumpster and discarded them....I am talking about Epson's, HP's, Panasonic's and Canon's. They were all color, so that may have something to do with it. But the Samsung color, which I mentioned in my earlier review, and this Brother Monochrome, are just Fantastic. They work and work...Enough said!

Great value for monochrome printer! No crappy software required. HL-L2370DW a favorite!
Brother two sided laser printers or MFC (multi-function) cannot be beat. Best value for most printing. No dried up ink cartridges or nozzles. No software has to be loaded. Can if you want to fax or scan. Easily last years for SOHO, teachers and such. Just buy good toner carts. Give them a cooling rest if you are printing 100's or 1,000's of pages a day or week. Buy one built for your monthly use duty cycle. Most people don't need color printing. If you need more that occasionally (go to office store) color save the money and the environment and buy color laser or Epson EcoTank.Note to HP, we no longer buy or use HP because of all the busy pestering crappy software. Epson is heading that way with the EcoTank messages. I de-installed the Epson software off most of the computers I support.

Amazing cost per page.
Printer software is hot garbage in general but the cost per page is unbeat so it fine to fight. After a firmware update which is painful to do it works fine.

Finally a printer that’s easy and works *almost* every time
I’m pretty tech-savvy but always struggled to find a printer that worked well and was reliable. This one comes as close as possible to always being reliable. In the last 3 months I’ve only had trouble with connectivity once and I use it at least once a week. Easy to print from my iPhone, iPad, or laptop. The quality is good and it’s also a fast printer making printing large documents really quick.
