Does anyone have a great recipe to share?

Recipe: 1C Fresh OR 1/2C Dried Blue or Black Elderberries (Note: Red Berries are poisonous) 3C Water 1C Raw Honey 1 Cinnamon Stick 3 Cloves Ginger to taste (fresh or powdered) Place berries, water & spices in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat & simmer for 30 minutes. Smash berries to release remaining juice & strain the mixture. Allow to cool & stir in honey. Syrup will last 2 - 3 months stored in the refrigerator.

I have a vita-mix which will grind berries. Can I grind these along with other fruits into a palatable smoothie? +Nutritional value raw vs cooked?

ALL elderberries have to be cooked before being consumed! The raw berries all contain small amounts of hydrocyanic acid, or cyanide. This breaks down into non-toxic inert ingredients when heated for a sufficient amount of time. I soak raw dehydrated elderberries in water and then boil in the microwave for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Let it cool then put the cooled mixture in a blender, puree, pour through a wire basket to strain out the seeds. The resulting juice and pulp mixture must be sweetened as it is quite bitter unsweetened. I use stevia.

People have replied that these Elderberries need to be cooked. Can they be powdered in a coffee grinder and then added to smoothie?

Yes must be cooked and per the following article enhances the benefits: https://normsfarms.com/blogs/growing-and-harvesting-elderberry/are-elderberry-bushes-poisonous
