Do you need to add buttermilk to make this?

Yes you need to add buttermilk to this version. When you see the yellow "Buttermilk Recipe" on the front, that means you need to add buttermilk. You can get a different version of Hidden Valley Ranch that doesn't require buttermilk, but it's not as good in our opinion.

Is this like the buttermilk mix packets?

Yes it is and if you want a recipe that is soooo good you will want to eat it with just a spoon... try this: 1-cup.......Mayonnaise 1/2-cup...Sour Cream 1/2-cup...Milk 1ea-4oz pkt...Hidden Valley Ranch-Buttermilk Seasoning mix

I used milk (not buttermilk) and mayo (I didn’t realize it was the buttermilk variety- I usually buy original), is that why it turned out so watery??

This is normally watery even with buttermilk. I use 1/2 cup buttermilk, 1/2 cup of light sour cream and 1 cup of mayonnaise.
