House of Chess presents 10" x 10" Magnetic Folding Travel Chess Set. One of the hottest selling item and an ideal gift for chess lovers. The inlaid Chess Board has been made by special inlaying process.2 Extra Knights, 2 Extra Pawns and 2 Extra Queens are provided with this chess set.All four sides of chess board have Algebraic notation.High powered magnets have been inserted inside each chess piece and the magnet power passes through the wooden board attracted by the metal sheet which holds the chess pieces tightly and never let them fall while traveling or playing. The strong magnet power doesn't let the chess piece fall even if the box is held in upside down position. The chess board / box has double hinges on the back and the front has a clasp which hold the upper & lower parts of the box firmly when the chess box is folded. The complete chess board / box & chess pieces have three coats of catalyzed lacquer in satin finish that provides protection from spills and general wear & tear. The complete unit is handmade in wood. The chess pieces are hand carved in Staunton Design. Thin green soft velvet felt has been applied on the bottom of the chess pieces. Every Chess piece fits into the special Insert which has been made according to the shape of the chess pieces.The Insert is made of EP Foam specially meant for protection of pieces. This set was twice the cost of the other set, and it is worth every penny that I paid! The finish on the chess pieces is much smoother and evenly applied than the other set. The quality of carving of the small wood pieces is superior, particularly the knights (the hardest piece to carve). Highly skilled carvers on display. House of Chess even gives you 2 sets of knights, the German Knight style and what looks like the "Fierce Knight" style to choose from (I prefer the German Knights on this set). 2 extra queens and 2 extra pawns as well. The quality of carving, feel, and design of all the pieces are impressive. A joy to play with. The finish on the chessboard is much better looking and likely more durable than on the first cheaper set I ordered. Hinges were misaligned on the cheaper set, resulting in the finish being pulled off the side of the board when opening the hinge. The hinges on this set were correctly installed, and of better quality. The magnetism was a bit stronger on the pieces of this set compared to the cheaper set, although one of the knights has a weak magnet. The board has 4 rubber "feet" that you can place into holes in the bottom of the board, enabling the board to set off a table or whatever surface you are placing the board on. A very thoughtful and useful feature. Comes with a bag to place to the board in, giving a bit of scratch protection to the beautiful board. I am very happy with this set, well worth twice the price of inferior products, and a fine choice for a 10 inch travel set. UPDATE: Seller replaced the piece that had a weak magnet. The size is great and we love that each piece has a place on the inside, so they aren’t just knocking around when packed. Whether you are a novice or have been playing for years, this chess board will give you hours of enjoyment. The board and pieces are very well made, however the bag for storing and protecting not the best. It was a little flimsy and very snug and hard to fit the board inside, so I did make a quilted new one, other than that I have nothing negative to say. Happy with my purchase.

**Q: Country of origin?**
A: India.  Chessboard is absolutely amazing.  Has a strong glue/varnish odor when you first receive it, so it is best to open it and put it in a garage, porch or shed to air out.  After that you are all set.

**Q: Why does the chess set come with 4 Knights. I understand the extra queens and pawns, but why 2 extra knights?**
A: The pawns do not make sense, but the extra knights do. There are times when you promote a pawn, a queen would not checkmate, but the knight would, ran into that situation a few times. Hope this answers your question.  I made 18 inch chessboards for my three adult kids and myself, I bought 6 sets of chess pieces from Poland and provided 1 and a half sets of pieces for each board in case they lose pieces or the dog gets them. LOL

I have been playing chess for 20 years and I have seen all kinds of boards. This one was an unexpectedly pleasant surprise when I received it. It is well worth the money and very impressive to play on and show off to friends. Magnets are strong and it is a great travel board. You can turn the board completely upside down if you want and the pieces aren't going anywhere. If you buy it as a gift, definitely buy it for someone who will appreciate the board, because it is the kind of fancy board that should be well cared for. The only downside, is that it has a strong wood finish and shellac smell when you first receive it. But a few days on your porch or garage, and the strong smell goes away. I think that is just a result of it being hand made and shipped straight to you. I definitely plan to buy another one just like it in the future so I have one for the house and one for travel.
