It can burn the roots. If the trees are dormant they won't need food anyway. So I don't feed my plants that are dormant during winter. Come the spring when plants start waking up and budding again it's okay to feed them. They will need the nitrogen then. So just feed them during the normal feeding seasons from spring to fall.
