Young Chen's Pocket Legal Dictionary (CE/EC) is compact and handy, clearly printed with pinyin as well as (simplified) Chinese characters for all entries in both sides of the dictionary. There are two principal shortcomings: (1) It seems to be designed only for people interested in U.S. law. While this may be quite understandable, I was hoping for something that would help me deal with legal terminology in China. (2) Rather than presenting a single alphabetical listing of terminology, terms are entered in eight separate categories - Commercial Law, Criminal Law, Family Law, etc. This seems badly misguided, as it means that before looking up a term, the user must first decide which category is the most likely locus for it. If the compiler believes that the category listing is useful, then he should provide indexes, Chinese and English, to help the user find desired terms. Of course this would approximately double the size of the dictionary.

I bought this book because I am researching Chinese laws and lawsuits.  Much like English, Chinese has its own legalese that does not find its way into regular dictionaries.  This book has been quite useful for many of these terms. Be aware, though, that the book focuses on American law, not Chinese.  So although finding Chinese terms of art is hit-or-miss, there is a lengthy definition for "blockbusting" (great if you are concerned with Civil Rights Era real estate terminology).  Nonetheless, it is a pretty handy resource and will certainly help you plod through much of the language in Chinese statutes and court opinions.
