The top is soft and fluffy-ish, but not absurdly so. I ended up returning the item only because I ordered the wrong size (and might be going a different route for an outdoor crate mat), but if I remember correctly, the bottom is a different material from the top and somewhat grippy. So, it would work nicely in a lot of places. All in all, for the sizes/costs, you can probably find something a little more affordable, but I doubt the whole thing would be washer friendly, so I think this makes this bed a good deal. We use them in the car crates so we like they can be thrown in the washer.
