Jem and the Misfits graphic novel review
On the back cover of Jem and the Misfits: THEIR SONGS ARE BETTER, BUT THE MISFITS HAVE LOST THEIR LABEL AND NOBODY IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS WILL GIVE THEM A SECOND CHANCE. ON THE ROPES AND DESPERATE TO GET BACK ON TOP. THEY'RE FORCED TO CONSIDER THE WORST CASE SCENARIO...A MISFITS REALITY TV SHOW. THOUGH IT PROMISES THE CHANCE TO GET THEM BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT, IT COMES WITH A HEAVY, PRIVACY-DESTROYING PRICE.Jem and the Misfits sets up how the Misfits reality TV show came about in the first issue. After that each issue is used to spotlight a member of the Misfits. I was most interested in Blaze's issue since I knew the least about Blaze personality wise since she was doing her best not to cause waves with the Misfits. All I knew was that Blaze was close to Clash and possibly related to her and that she was a loyal friend, that's it. So yes, I was very pleased when I found out Blaze's backstory in her issue. In this graphic novel we also discover how the Misfits became a band, what the Misfits really are to each other, and of course if they have what it takes to claw themselves back to the top!

More to learn
I always believed one of the original jem’s strength was how the characters were people, and how they had relatable problems. And this comic builds on that. With this comic we see the lives the misfits had before they became the misfits, and just how tight nit they are.

This does the Misfits justice
This was AMAZING and actually made me love the Misfits even more. This touches on the original cartoon's storyline of Rox not being able to read, and how that all came about, Jetta's origins (they're not what you think!), Stormer's weight issues, Blaze following her dreams, and so much more. I absolutely loved it! The artwork is spot on, the story lines hit home, this is a must read for any Jem fan!

Love this series!
In this volume, we finally get more backstories for the Misfits and we learn more about how they came together and what keeps them together. The volumes without Sophie Campbell’s art are sometimes hit-and-miss for me, but I enjoyed St. Onge’s vibrant and movement-filled approach here. Something about this whole reboot really resonates with me – the loyalty and resiliency of all the characters (including the Misfits) keeps me coming back for more.

Haven't been this hooked since Danger Girl
Kelly Thompson can do no wrong in my book, and the artists she works with are amazing, channeling the truly outrageous glamour from the 80s cartoon series and seamlessly incorporating modern tech, styles, and social issues. These comics are addictive, and I don't know what to do with myself as I (not so) patiently wait for the next one to come out. Keep 'em coming! <3
