Iams Proactive Health Healthy Senior Dry Cat Food with Chicken, 16 lb. Bag

I have a older cat who is very fussy on what she will eat and she actually loves it

I used to work as a pet food nutritionist for another brand off Legacy Drive in Plano, Tx and IAMS is what my cats love best. I only want the best food for my cats: young and old. I heavily researched this brand and through my discovery, learned that it is made through MARS, Inc. (a global Fortune 100 company) based in Waco, TX. That's right! The same people who make Snickers, M&M's and the Mars bar also make pet food! Now candy lovers will know how tasty this company prides itself in making delicious treats and food! I visited the facility in Waco, Tx. and the pet food is made at the adjacent building from the candy lines building. Did you know that MARS, Inc also donates to shelter pets? So if your pet came from the shelter, they most likely enjoyed the IAMS brand. The vitamins give pets a shiny, glossy coat while also keeping them healthy! Veterinarians almost always have this brand to offer, but at a higher cost. Since I have a mixture of rescues that differ in different ages, I chose to mix this food with the Adult version *pink bag) so nobody tries to change bowls unexpectedly on me. All my cats love to eat this version (the green bag, for older cats) best. So what exactly is the difference between the two versions mostly? The Senior version is easier to digest, the kibbles are smaller and easier to chew. It's not automatically soft, but you can add a couple of teaspoons of water to soften the food for those with early dental issues due to age. This bag has Chromium and Condriton along with other excellent vitamins. That alone helps with joint aches for your pet. You also don't have to purchase daily vitamins for your pet since it's balanced well! So the value is excellent for what it offers alone. That is hard to find these days when you have to sift through so many different brands new and old. MARS, Inc is good on staying on top of recalled items where many other brands won't mention anything until many months later. This food contains a chicken bi-product so your cat gets the Taurine vitamin levels your cat needs. I highly recommend this product and so do my cats. This bag will not overwork the liver of your pet like Blue. If your cat is diabetic, your veterinarian will know what to give them so their glucose stays in check. Currently, there is not a food brand on the shelves that deal with glucose and you will need a prescription to deal with that. I've been using Iams dry kibble cat food for my prima donna toriteshell ever since she came home from the animal shelter in the autumn of 2007. At that time, she was teacup size and could tuck in and sleep comfortably under my ear. On the advice of my longtime vet, she had Iams kitten formula dry food, with a very small treat of wet tuna 2-3 times per week. At about 1-1/2 years, she switched to Iams Indoor Weight & Hairball Care Dry food, and did very well on that for about 11-1/2 years. Then, for some reason, she began having problems with a very upset stomach, and frequent vomiting after eating. So, I tried samples of 3 other Iams dry foods, and she did very well on the Healthy Senior Dry Cat Food, and had no more upset tummy troubles (and no more 3 AM cleanups). For the last 20 months, she's been on that, augmented with 1 tsp. of whitefish & tuna "pate" twice a day. Initially, this was to get some medication into her, but after the medication was finished, she still wanted that little bit of wet food, so we've gone with that. Since changing from the Indoor Weight & Hairball Control formula, her coat seems to be softer, and there have been only a few stomach upsets - maybe 3 or 4 in all. She's also lost a bit of weight, and is definitely more active and more vocal. I was buying the larger 3.something bags, but I noticed that the texture seemed to deteriorate by about 2/3 of the way through a large bag. So, I changed to the 1.5 kg size, and this has worked out well, still with 1 tsp of whitefish & tuna 2X daily. On the principle that, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" I think we'll be staying with Proactive Healthy Dry Senior unless circumstances, or the vet suggest otherwise. I've had very good luck with Iams over the years, particularly their dry kibble, and this is another success. She's energetic, healthy, and deigns to be admired and have a good chin scritch when she's not roaring around the main floor at 6:45 PM, or doing guard duty in the "sentry post" that overlooks the front street - a task she has scheduled every day, almost to the minute.

I decided to try this food for my older cats, and I'm glad I did. They took to it right away, which doesn't always happen with senior cats. The kibble size is easy for them to eat, and they seem to enjoy the flavor. I've noticed they stay active, maintain a healthy appetite, and have had no digestive issues since switching. I also appreciate that it's formulated specifically for senior cats to help support their changing nutritional needs. The bag stays fresh, the quality has been consistent, and the price is reasonable for what you get. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and will continue buying it for my cats.

I did a month long study with my 2 cats to see which brand of dry healthy cat food they liked best. I gave them the choice of 5 different types of food, of different tastes, 3 of other brands and 2 of IAMs. They could choose and eat any 1 they wanted out of the 5 different cat food dispensers any time they wanted, and while they would eat the other food, it was only after the ones which had the IAMs were empty. This happened not just once, but everytime, so from now on, all I feed them is different choices of IAMs and they are very happy.
