If you’re looking for a good 1v1 game, I strongly recommend Watergate. It’s easy to learn, challenging, has high replayability, takes less than an hour, and is asymmetric while being balanced. The only downside is that you work in direct opposition to the other player; there are some definite “take that” moments. If you don’t like zero sum games or are playing with someone who can’t lose gracefully, I’d recommend against it. **Q: Is this game geared more for children or adults? I am buying this as a gift for adult game board enthusiasts.** A: It's a family game, for kids and adults to play together. It seems as if the game is harder the more players there are, so maybe 6 adults might enjoy playing it. I've only played with children, three players max, and it's a bit easy. My one beef with the game is that it would be more interesting if there were a greater number of spies, so that it would be more difficult to guess what spy another player is. By giving up a turn, you can guess what spy another player is and if you are right, that person is out. If you are wrong, you're out. But there are only six spies, so it's not hard to guess. The players go around the board buying or otherwise acquiring necessary spy items. When a player has all her spy items needed, she goes to her embassy, declares herself and wins. **Q: Amazon's recommended age for this is 5 and up, but the manufacturer says something different. Is this too complicated for 4 to 7 year olds?** A: I would concur with the starting age of 5 years. A very bright 4 year old might be Ok with some coaching. This game requires some planning and foresight, as the player must purchase what they need but also what they don't need (in order to throw suspicion off their true spy identity). So, I think it would be a stretch for a 4 year old to play. A kindergartener, at 5, would be the youngest I would recommend. A seven year old would be quite capable of enjoying this game and playing independently, in my experience. I’m posting a short video so you can get a feel for how it plays. The instructions might take a minute to fully understand at first, but once you get the hang of it, the game really flows.
