A uniquely detailed visual representation of the legendary Japanese warships. Equipped with the largest guns and heaviest armour and with the greatest displacement of any ship ever built, the Yamato proved to be a formidable opponent to the US Pacific Fleet in the Second World War. The book contains a full description of the design and construction of the battleship including wartime modifications, and a career history followed by a substantial pictorial section with rare onboard views of Yamato and her sister ship Musashi , a comprehensive portfolio of more than 1,020 perspective line artworks, 350 colour 3D views, and 30 photographs. Janusz Skulski's comprehensive anatomies of these renowned ships coupled with 3D artist Stefan Draminski's superb realistic renditions of the ships bring the topic to life with the most detailed renditions of these ships ever seen. Review: Best source yet for the physical details of the Yamato class battleships - A must-have for any modeler seeking to produce the most accurate example possible of either Yamato or Musashi. Particularly in view of the recent new release of the Gallery-Glow2B 1/200 Yamato model kit to surpass the ancient Nichimo version, you'll appreciate the additional details offered by this book. I'm certainly no expert on the Yamato, having read knowledgeable analyses from other experts who point out that not all graphic depictions in the book are 100% accurate, but it's the best single source yet. Beautifully illustrated, high-quality printing. None better on this subject.... Review: great books - If you are into Japanese battleships and can afford these, try to buy them. A little disappointing on the Yamato, since the Japanese destroyed most of the documentation, but still the most informative thing I have ever read. I probably should put italics on that I, since most of the WWII stuff I read is more European.

This book is the final word on these two ships.
I have Skulski's earlier Anatomy of the Ship volume on the Yamato, the two Kagero books on Yamato and Musashi, and even a Gakken modelbuilder's book on Yamato. Skulski's latest puts all of those to shame. This book contains everything from the earlier Yamato AotS volume and more, numerous color CAD renderings of the ships, and colorized renditions of every extant photograph of the two ships. Includes interiors, exteriors, cross-sections, and even comprehensive shell plating details. Given the sparse details on the subject matter available, the sheer effort that went into researching and creating this work is nothing less than staggering. As a bonus, the book contains diagrams and photos of the Yamato and Musashi wrecks, including photos from Paul Allen's 2015 Musashi expedition. Modelbuilders, naval history buffs, and naval architecture aficionados need not look further if you have an interest in these ships - this book is the definitive, comprehensive, authoritative, unsurpassable reference on them.

A must book for IJN navy enthusiasts.
This book is just too good to be true. It's an update to an earlier work by the same author in the Anatomy series which was phenomenal when published. This edition is night and day better. Dozens of wonderful clear photos of these little photographed sisters are included. The drawings are well done as are the 3-D illustrations. This book is a must for modelers, writers, and researchers. I've studied and modeled these impressive battleships most of my life and I highly recommend this stunning work.

A powerful tour de force coverage on these great ships, Much fuller than the earlier anatomy of the ship issue, the authors have performed a labor to great detail of these giants, the very last of their kind. Excellent 3D renderings of the various areas of the ships make this book a modeler's dream come true. The book even includes drawings of the wrecks, and they are enlightening to say the least. I heartily recommend this volume for any and all interested in these great ships.

Probably the most comprehensive book on the IJN Yamato and Musashi.
The computer renderings are pretty amazing covering both ships. There are quite a few photos that I have never seen and plenty of text. The only down side for me as a modeler is there are not diagrams of the rigging . Still a great book

Sehr empfehlenswert

Top resource material for Yamato-class battleships
It is important to keep in mind that near the end of the Pacific War, the Japanese military destroyed most records, drawings, and photos pertaining to the Yamato-class battleships and other associated naval documents. The information and pictures contained in this book are compiled from the interviews of Yamato engineers/designers, dockyard personnel, United States Navy photos, and inspections of the wrecks on the ocean floor. So with this perspective in mind, this is the number one source for Yamato-class battleship technical information and pictures. This is the third edition, modified from the 1995 second edition of the book. This edition now contains 3D renderings (computer generated models) of Yamato and Musashi in different configurations during the war, as well as individual components right down to renderings of the ventilators providing AC to the main turrets. It also contains the same profile drawings from the previous edition, while adding scanned documents of original construction drawings, such as the rudder and main gun barrels. Finally, the black-and-white photographs from WWII have been digitally colorized compared to the previous book version. Now for criticisms. The book is expensive, and as such I find myself expecting more original photographs of Yamato and Musashi. There are other original and digitally colorized photos of both ships (for example, a fore view of Yamato at Truk). Additionally, the digital colorization of original photos doesn't look realistic - Google searches can find much better colorizations done by Irootoko, Jr. which better resemble real colors and environments. Finally, and this might just be me, but a 3D cutaway would be nice to show the octagonal citadel and machinery. (Edit: I also noticed that some content that was present in the second edition was removed in this book. This third edition encompasses both Yamato and Musashi, while the second edition was focused only on Yamato. As a result, some of the detailed drawings and design phase information have been omitted. If you are looking for all available information on the Yamato-class, I recommend finding a copy of the second edition if you can.) Overall, this is a great addition to a naval or WWII book collection, and a great secondary source. (This post has been edited to include additional findings)
