The paint/coating on the spring squeeks when you squeeze. The handle grips are decent, but sweat can build up in the gaps of the grips and make it slippery; I haven't used the tape as I'm trying to build skin strength (it can give caluses the first few times you use it) but I'm guessing the tape can help with not slipping. Only downside I've seen is that the sweat buildup makes it harder to train consistently so you need to clean it. As a skinny weak guy, this helped me be more confident in a short sleeved shirt without needing to use weights.
