We installed PumpSpy’s original Sump Pump Smart Outlet in 2018, so it has been in continuous use for about 7 years. In short, the Smart Outlet has been reliable, easy to use, and has provided actionable intel on sump pump activity that we previously lacked. For example, we now know that on an average week, our sump pump activates about 5-7 times. Sometimes it goes for days without activating. The most it has ever activated is 4 times in one day. Sometimes it doesn’t activate even once during days of heavy rain. So based on this info, we see no need to install a back up 12 volt sump pump with battery. We do have solar and propane-powered generators if something extraordinary occurs, the power is out, there are flood conditions, etc. But for us there isn’t much risk, which we now know thanks to the PumpSpy unit. We travel a lot, and really like being able to see what’s happening with home systems. If an emergency occurs we can reach out to someone local. PumpSpy allows this, although for security reasons their servers reject international queries . A U.S. based VPN works when traveling abroad. The PumpSpy app isn’t a sophisticated design, but it is easy to set up, configurable in terms of locations and device names, and allows more than one mobile number to be contacted in the event of a system message or alarm. It has worked perfectly in the seven years that we’ve used it. We use an Eero mesh 2.4/5 GHz WIFI network with Xfinity as the ISP. Installation was seamless and took no more than five minutes. Other than occasional system updates from PumpSpy which takes the Smart Outlet offline, I don’t recall that we have ever had a system outage. I’m curious why a fair number of 1 star reviews seem to have had trouble with installation and system stability. We exclusively use the IOS version of the app. The Smart Outlet form factor is simply better than any comparable system we’ve seen. It just plugs into an outlet, vs other similar units that need to be mounted on the wall, have a cord hanging from the unit—simply less messy than other systems. In seven years of use, the single equipment failure we had was the high water sensor—a $13 part. When it failed we called PumpSpy, had no trouble getting in touch with an expert tech support person—based in the U.S.—and had a new part on its way. We since have had a handful of discussions with PumpSpy staff since we decided to also use PumpSpy’s Smart Outlet in our sewer ejector basin, an application that isn’t supported. In every case in talking to PumpSpy staff we received informed, professional an overall excellent advice. Obviously cost isn’t a primary consideration in choosing a smart device to manage a home system that has a critical downside risk (flooding). But the Smart Outlet is about $100 less expensive than the other comparable systems we investigated. All in all, our experience with PumpSpy’s hardware, software and technical support have all been exceptional. We trust this company’s competence and we trust their character. Since this type of experience with the products and service of a small company is no longer necessarily the norm, I thought that I would share this information with the Amazon community.

*Updated review Jan 1 2025 This continues to disappoint me. The Wi-Fi continues to come and go. And from time to time, I now receive a “power is off” alert. Ironically though in the app, the Wi-Fi shows as connected even on refresh. The bonus is below. They eliminate the cycle history past 90 days now. According to the email, this was causing them system performance issues. So instead of adding more system resources, let’s just get rid of the data. Considering life expectancy on sump and its components is based on the number of cycles, this is an important metric to keep tabs on. Now this isn’t even possible. Between the issues and eliminating of features, the value for the money continues to degrade. So what was once already expensive for what you get is now ridiculous. <snip> There are only 2 days left before we perform maintenance and implement changes to our system. Maintenance will begin at 9:00 AM on June 11, 2024. Quick Recap: Alert History: We previously communicated the app will display only the past 90 days of alert history. We are no longer planning on truncating the alert history at this time. Pump Cycle History: Historical pump cycle data that was stored on our servers will be removed to optimize system performance. The app will continue to show the recent 90 days of data. *original review* I’m on my second unit after a short period of time. The first one flaked out with the power sensor and support was fine on replacing. The second one is having issue right out of the gate all WiFi related. Once a week it disconnects from WiFi. A power cycle restores the connection again for about another week. Considering I’m not local, this isn’t the most convenient. When the product works, it seems to be ok. Otherwise the product seems fragile, low quality internals or I’m really just that unlucky.

I’m writing my PumpSpy review after using it for over two months now, and I’m very happy with the product capabilities, and peace of mind for my primary sump pump. Installation and use of the smart phone app (iOS in my case) was very easy if you follow the directions carefully. Be sure during installation to take time to test the alarm set and clear notifications for each of the monitored functions. PumpSpy Technical Support is only available by email, and they are very responsive in resolving issues. My original PumpSpy out of the box kept alarming on high water level even without the sensor attached, so PumpSpy sent a replacement under warranty right away, and it has been working fine. Similar to other reviews I read, I experienced issues with my WiFi network. I tried a WiFi range extender and that didn’t help either. Since PumpSpy monitors and alerts when WiFi signal is lost, I got loss of signal alerts all the time, and had to reboot my router every couple of days. I didn’t realize my WiFi network was that bad since I hadn’t been monitoring it that closely until I had PumpSpy to alert me when it wasn’t working. But then I realized other devices lost WiFi signal too when PumpSpy reported it. My solution there was to replace my old traditional WiFi router and range extender with a eero Pro 3-pack mesh router. That product is amazing, and resolved all my WiFi issues. I now have a strong WiFi signal that is almost as fast as a wired port, on each level of my home, and there have been zero interruptions. I haven’t had a PumpSpy WiFi alert since installing the eero! One thing that surprised me with the PumpSpy is how often my primary sump pump cycles. I really didn’t believe it at first until I timed it and observed it running and reporting the cycles. It runs hundreds of times a day after it rains. It’s interesting to see the cycle history to compare the cycles when it has been dry, or is raining. Overall, PumpSpy is a great product that does what it says it will do, but you might need to upgrade your WiFi, which you will also be glad you did!

Others have indicated challenges setting up the WiFi connection but I did not experience any issues. I set it up using an iPhone 8 running iOS 12 and it took about 5 minutes to get it online. The instructions were short and easy to follow. I also found it reconnects to WiFi quickly (within 1 minute) when unplugging and replugging back in. Plugging the device into the GFI outlet is as simple as it can get although the alignment of the center hole to secure to the outlet/junction box didn’t align with my outlet (maybe it’s my particular outlet?) Not sure if others have had this problem but it is secure without it and don’t feel there is any likely risk of it falling out. As others have indicated the outlet you plug your pump into (on the device) is ‘loose’ so you’ll likely need to use some electrical tape or zip tie to make sure it doesn’t fall out. I’m running a two pump setup so the main pump gets plugged into the ‘monitored’ outlet of the device to get data on number of cycles run and run time; I found the app to refresh with cycle data almost instantly after the pump cycles off. The high water sensor is mounted above the main pump float level and slightly below the battery backup pump sensor level and when testing I found the phone app alert to come through basically instantly. I’ve found the alerts (high water, normal water, lost power, power restored) from the phone app to be basically instantaneous. You can also setup text message alerts, which are redundant with the phone app alerts, but I found them to be on a lag compared to the app alerts at times but good feature if you want to alert other cell phones that don’t/can’t have the phone app. I tested a loss of power to router (i.e. no WiFi) scenario and it took about 10 minutes to receive the alert that there was no connectivity (the alert is triggered because the manufacuter’s server hasn’t received a communication from the device). Others have indicated issues with the connectivity after having it installed for some time, too early for me to tell but I’ll update my review if I experience that down the road. Overall I like that this device will alert me instantly when the power to the outlet is out (if the GFI trips) and when the water level breaches the high level sensor (say if my main pump fails) because both of these scenarios would indicate my battery backup pump is running and that means I have a window of time to get things back online. I also like that it will alert me within a reasonable time (10 minutes) when the device doesn’t report into the manufacturer’s servers because it likely indicates a full house power outage and that my battery backup pump is running. I didn’t give it 5 stars because of the shortcomings with the mounting hole (to the outlet) and because of the loose fit of the pump plug into the device.

My situation: Years ago, I had a 14 inch flood in my finished basement. Now, I have 2 sump pits. The one in the front of the basement runs less often but I still need to know what is going on. The one in the back of the basement has high volumes of water. I have 2 1/2 horsepower Zoeller pumps. I recently replaced both Zoeller pumps. The float switches last around 10 years. But as I started to examine the conditions in the basement, I realized that I would like a little more protection and I wanted to have a better understanding of what exactly is going on down there. So, I read about this PumpSpy Smart Outlet and realized that it could be a nice addition to my system. So, I bought 2 of them. Installation: Basically, you plug in the PumpSpy Smart Outlet into an existing outlet and male pump plug into the top female receptacle on the PumpSpy Outlet. It lights up in Yellow for set-up mode. Then you download the PumpSpy Android app onto your phone, connect it to your wireless network, add the location, add the device, and once it is online the top outlet will be a green light. Not terribly difficult to set-up but you will need to follow the instructions. Results: The Android app allows me to see how frequently the pumps run, how long the pumps run in each cycle, and the approximate gallons pumped. Now I know exactly what is going on down there with the pumps. Very nice. The best feature is that you can add your cell phone number to the PumpSpy Android App and you can receive text message alerts if anything is going wrong. If your internet goes down, you will get a text message. Most importantly, if the power goes out, you will get a text message as well. This is perfect for my situation since a power outage could lead to a massive flood in a bad storm. I also invested in the PumpSpy Battery Backup solution for the front of the basement which works off of the cellular network (not wireless). I will be adding a third Zoeller pump and it will also be using a PumpSpy Smart Outlet. How my system will work? The power goes out, I get a text message from PumpSpy. In a rain storm, the battery backup systems will last for 5-10 hours. I am installing a back-up generator, an inlet on the outside of my house, and an interlock device on my electrical panel. I get home and fire up the generator and my basement stays dry. The PumpSpy Smart Outlets are an integral part of my system that will allow me to make decisions based on the weather conditions. Love this product. UPDATE: i received a text message tonight from the PumpSpy Outlet: Excessive Motor Runtime. I checked the app and it looks like the pump motor was running continuously. Checked the pumps and the main pump was running but the water was NOT pumping out of the pit. I unplugged the main pump, checked outside and it turns out that the discharge pipe froze. I cut the excess pipe and used a heat gun to melt the ice inside the pipe. Plugged in the main pump and then it pumped and drained the pit. The PumpSpy App text message feature probably just saved me $300 because I never would have known that the pump was running continuously and it would have burned up eventually.

I had a lot of problems trying to install this. It would not work on my phone (Samsun S8) using the app and not the manual mode either (through a web browser). I was able to install it with my tablet (Samsung TabA) not successful with the app, but did work with the browser mode. But even then i was not able to complete the installation fully. I was getting an error that my outlet serial number was not registered. After some help from the customer support they got it registered. Now the device is registered its still not working. The outlet is not reporting any information through the app. As of writing this review its 6/12/2022, last i heard from customer support was 5/18/2022. Additionally i bought this on 4/14/2022. And this thing wasn't working right and they assured me the device had 3 yrs warranty and that it would get addressed. My original plan was to return it within the Amazon return window but that's long gone. Now we're stuck with $160 outlet with a green light. 8/19/2022 Update Back in July PumpSpy ended up agreeing to exchange out the smart outlet with a new one. I got the new one and it installed much easier than the original (mostly). However, there was still one more issue with the installation that wasn't going through until I was able to get a hold of customer support. Additionally the APP was generally not working. When trying to switch between the pages on the app, it would simply not load. After getting things mostly resolved with tech support I continued to have issues. Even after re-installing the app on my phone I had some issues with the pumpspy app showing pump information. The way i was able to resolve this was to clear the cache and the data for the app. So far everything seems to be working as described. However, I've not tried to simulate a trigger for the level sensor or pump running too long. I'm going to bump this up to a 3 star. We'll see if the pumpspy continues to work as advertised. But the extended issues with the device and the app need improvement and the shear time it took to get resolved. The tech support person was very friendly, its the same person every time, so I think there is only one. I suspect he's overwhelmed. Update 10/26. Back in August, i tried to set the alerts to make sure i would get them. The alert I was most interested in was that i get an alert if the pump is stuck on. In some email traffic with tech support it was said that this device had the functionality (turns out it doesn't, more on that later). During this test of plugging in the pump to the outlet something malfunctioned and i was no longer seeing cycles. After some more back and forth, long delays/wait between communications. I got my 3rd pump outlet. Seems to be working ok for now. Pumpspy did show some good faith and own that the functionality of notifying for a pump stuck on was incorrect. In summary, it seems like a great product with a lot of frustrations. Its a small company with some qwirks to iron out. I hope they continue to roll out new functionality via updates (such as pump stuck on). Overall, im 50/50 on if I'd buy it again.

I was debating on whether to give this review a 4 star rating or a 5 star rating. I settled on a 5 star rating solely due to the support response speed I received. If it were based on my 1st attempt at installation it would be a 1 star rating. The product would have gotten a 4 star rating once working but the great support bumped it back up to 5. Let me elaborate. This product is solid, and works well, once it works. I had trouble getting it installed, but once working, it works great. Let me elaborate below: 1. Installation: This is where I had issues, which was even more frustrating because I am an IT professional and as such this should have been a breeze. The included pamphlet for install is well designed, but my experience did not match. Basically on the step where you plug the outlet into your AC outlet, you are supposed to connect to the Wifi network named "PumpSpyOutlet" that the device puts off, then you connect to that Wifi network then launch the app and then tell the app which Wifi network to connect the outlet to. For me it showed a "Wiced" Wifi network. I connected to it and the app does nothing. I got a pop-up on my android phone to "sign in" as if it were a public WiFi network or hotel etc. Basically this directs me to the internal web server page of the device. Luckily on this page there is a Wifi button and you can tell the device which Wifi network to use, but the app doesn't show data in this scenario. The ring turned green, meaning my outlet WAS connected to the Wifi, but something on the back-end was wrong or I had a defective device. Not counting my issues, the install is pretty simple, and the hardest part, which is not hard at all, is to get down by your sump pump and screw the metal bracket around your discharge pipe to put the high water sensor about an inch above your actual sump pump float that kicks it on, and then run the connector to the bottom of the outlet. Your WiFi must reach your sump pump area (obviously). NOTE: Ideally you are supposed to use the included screw to mount the outlet into the box rather than just plugging it in on top of the existing face-plate to avoid accidental slip out etc. This would work if your existing outlet is a two-outlet box. Mine was a single outlet box so the screw hole didn't line up, but that it is fine, it is in there pretty tight so I don't think it would fall out by itself ever. Just be aware that screwing in your PumpSpy outlet may not work if you have a single port AC outlet. 2. Support Solution: Email is the only support option available, which I did at about 6PM Eastern on a Friday. I honestly didn't expect to hear back and figured I would have to do a swap through Amazon. The next morning on Saturday they emailed me basically saying that they have had some devices here and there that show the Wiced network, rather than the PumpSpyOutlet network. The Wiced network is the build in Broadcom web server from what I can tell, and they needed my serial number and PumpSpy account email and they would link up my PumpSpy unit (serial #) to my PumpSpy account. They emailed me about 4 hours later before I even had a chance to respond checking in and asking for the serial #. I replied with the required info and a few hours later they had it fixed. Now when I launched the app I could see the data that was being collected by my PumpSpy outlet. 2. Using the product / app: Now that they had the back end fixed, I now see my data. I can see lots of info, including Wifi status, Main Outlet status, Sump Pump status, Water Level status, Last Cycle time, Cycle Length & # of Cycles today. All very neat. The Alert tab shows which alerts have happened (high water, sump pump issue etc.) and the history tab will show you how many cycles and approximately how many galons of water it pumped out that day. The Contacts area of the app is where the magic happens, you can put in as many phone numbers or email addresses as you like, so I put in my personal cell, work cell, work email and wife's cell # for alert. I tested it by lifting the water sensor (to simulate if water rose the float) and within a few seconds I got my messages to let me know. It also lets you know when it returns to normal. Being alerted within a few seconds is perfect. It supposedly will also let you know if it stops hearing from your SmartOutlet within a few minutes, I guess if the Wifi goes down or your lose power at the house. UPSIDES: The service is free, the only cost is the hardware. The hardware is a bit high, but the value is great if you've ever had any flooding anywhere, ever. I am sure part of the hardware cost goes into paying for the servers that host the sump data and notificaiton systems as well. The support was quick and nimble. The data is great, the peace of mind is great. DOWNSIDES: My "settings" area of the app has no Wifi section so I am not sure how I would ever change the Wifi network it was connected to if needed, I guess I could factory reset it and then use the Wiced network to get it on a new network, but that seems like something overly technical for most people. I should be able to use the app to point it to a new WiFi network. If the servers ever go down, this product becomes absolutely worthless, it relies entirely on servers in the cloud and your device reports to them, this device does NOT contact you directly if there is an issue (the notification is sent from their servers in the cloud), which is good because its a lot less complicated than running your own SMTP server or something like that, but it has the downfall that if this company ever goes out of business, the outlet is useless. OVERALL: It is clear that this is a very small company, but they do a great job of looking professional. The website is top notch, the product packaging is just as good as you would see on any product at Walmart, the pamphlet is professional etc. The only tip-off that this was a small company was the app only lists about ~100 downloads for the Android version and the emails, while helpful, lacked a signature, persons name and was probably just some guy checking that email address on his phone, but that's fine since the support was quick and helpful. I would recommend that you buy it especially if you only have one sump pump. The peace of mind is worth it.

Unit is prone to disconnecting from WIFI after numerous network adjustments even when signal strenght is strong. When unit is connected, there are hours long gaps within their reporting tools. Data is only stored for 90 days making it difficult to track yearly high ground water trends. Data is also non downloadable stressing the absence of current data retention restrictions. Great concept that is poorly executed.

This is not a solicited or payed for review... and I'm giving this a 5-star rating based on function and simplicity more than on any long-term experience. To put my review in context, I have an abnormally high rate of ground water coming up into my sump pit (no water ever comes through the weeping tiles) for the area I'm in. For four years running my pump operates every 45 minutes, even through the dead of a Winnipeg winter where ambient temps can drop to -35ºC. In those 4 years I've replaced my sump pump 4 times after failure, presumably because of the high duty cycle. I installed this yesterday, and already it has alerted me to a high-water situation where the pump float snagged/didn't activate. I chose the PumpSpy over a battery backup system because I'm more interested in having the operating data of the pump and an occasional trip to the crawlspace than I am a $400 backup system that doesn't really alert me well to root-cause problems. So far, using the PumpSpy flow rate estimate, I've pumped out 1000 gallons in 18 hours on 21 cycles. Dr. W. Edwards Deming famously said, "Without data, you're just another person with an opinion" and "In God we trust. All others must bring data." PumpSpy gives you data :) Connection and account set up were a breeze (5 minutes max). Inquiries I made of PumpSpy customer support looking for some app improvements were also answered within a few hours.

Not working half the time since the update that came without warning and wiped out all the historical data. The product has 90% less value now that it only records 1 day of data. Epic fail on the part of pump spy. Very disappointed!!! Even if the info was not 100% accurate it still was indicative of the sump use. I needed this info and that’s why I bought it. Feel ripped off now. Sorry for the language but I’m so disappointed now.

This device was purchased to replace the very limited functionality Night Eye Alarm by Liberty. It was more expensive and was only good for alerting to high water. This device and its mobile app provides much more helpful diagnostics such as when the sump pump runs, how long, and approx water pumped. It tracks all history so that you can identify if it is matching weather conditions or if you might have other water issues. It also has a high water accessory that attaches to any sump pump. This has saved us a lot by alerting us to problems with our pump before a costly repair. I would highly recommend this product. App was updated recently to restore full history tracking. Phone support was fantastic. Great value!

PumpSpy works as advertised, except for a couple of small observations. First the good, what some might not realize is that this outlet is a plugin to an existing electrical outlet ... no other electrical work needed. It says that it doesn't with an extension cord but I had no choice except to use one from the unit to the pump cord, and it works fine. A work around, if it doesn't work for you, is to plug the unit into the extension cord. It may be that the quality of the extension cord limits the unit's ability to work. Connection to the internet was easy and worked immediately. The unit appears to be functioning well, reporting cycles accurately. Observations: 1. The water level detector is about 8 feet long, which can be a problem if the electrical outlet is farther from the sump pit or the sump pit is deep. Apparently you can order an extension, but this is not listed on the website. 2. The unit took about one day to start recording cycles on the app, but since then has recorded all cycles. 3. I can't get the app to record my contact information for PumpSpy alerts, what gives?? I've gone through all my settings and all notifications and alerts are turned on.

The first pump spy I received didn’t work but it was promptly replaced! Once the new one was received it was easy to setup, it keeps track of how many times it pumps and estimates the gallons pumped, you can add more than one phone number to receive texts and alerts... I would recommend this to anyone with a finished basement... Also if you have crappy rural Canadian internet it doesn’t seem to slow down your speed at all!!!
