How many pages can you actually print on one drum? 12,000 seems way too good to be true as I am currently getting around 1,000 on a generic drum.

The yield of 12 000 pages is based on 5% coverage (industry standard) No one prints that little, average customer prints about15-20%. therefore you should get 3000-5000 pages. if you are only getting 1000 then you must be printing graphs or pictures or logos. if not then that is a poor quality drum.

So what exactly is this good for if you have to have it filled with toner?

Our Brother printers put the toner on the roller called "the photosensitive drum" inside the drum unit, and then prints letters and images by fixing toner to the paper by heat and pressure. This is needed in order to print information on the paper.

One of the comments states that you only get the drum, not the toner. Can you simply replace the toner on an existing drum?

Yes. We replace just the toner more often than the drum. Our Brother printers notify us when we need to replace the drum.
