Useful device for finding and avoiding veins
This is a review of the Otica LED Infrared Vein Finder. Which was priced at £148.00 at the time of posting this review. This lightweight plastic vein finder is supplied with a USB-A to pin type charging cable, an instruction leaflet, a spare viewing glass, and a dodgy looking 2 part charging wall plug. Let’s get the bad bits out of the way first. The wall plug looks dangerous to me and will be going straight in the recycling box. It is unnecessary as I’m sure everyone has a USB wall plug designed for use in this country. Not too sure what the spare viewing glass is for as I can’t see any way to use it. However, it’s not all bad as the device is very useful for finding veins. It has 22 orange LEDs to look for veins close to the skin surface and 8 red LEDs to find deeper veins. Both sets of LEDs have 3 brightness levels and can be used separately or combined. I found using the device to be very easy both for finding a vein for a blood draw or when I need to avoid hitting a vein when injecting my regular intra-muscular meds. Overall, this is a very useful device that doesn’t need a 2 part wall plug, the likes of which I’ve never seen before, as I have a drawer full of USB wall charger plugs.

Works
My wife's a doctor, so I have some insight into the kit they use at hospital for the same job, and they're really very expensive machines. That said, for what is a consumer product, and the reason I've knocked off a star, is that for what it is - it does feel like the price positioning has been upped as it is 'health-tech', above what the same kit would likely cost the consumer in any other category. That aside, it's straightforward to use and works well - in the absence of many other options in the market, if you have need for one of these at home - then this is worth a look.

Huge help
As someone who has a relative with a medical condition that requires regular injections, this is a huge help! Neither of us have had much luck getting used to administering the injections even after all this time as finding veins is way harder than one thinks it is. This really makes the whole process far more straightforward and we don't need to rely on trial and error any longer. The gadget acts like a sort of torch that shows up the veins as slightly darker lines on the arm so you have a perfect guide to put the needle in every time. I only wish I could have had something like this year ago, it would have saved a lot of time and frustration. I will say though that I wish the tool was slightly more robust. We intend to keep it in the house only but if it were made a little more sturdy then it would have been possible to take it on holiday without worrying about breaking it. Would still highly recommend it though as it has really changed our lives.

Rubbish
Ordered this for my wife due to phlebotomista never able to get any blood out of her. Yes it highlights veins, but no better than the naked eye. Any the price? £145? - that is ridiculous. It’s a poorly made plastic box with some led lights in a ring. Disclaimer: I am privileged enough to be part of the Amazon Vine program and as such, I have the opportunity to request products that I would find useful/potentially buy to road test in exchange for an honest review. I am not paid for this and all of my reviews are unbiased and based on my own experience.

Vein spotter
Unfortunately it’s not as good as I thought as it’s not easy to spot deep veins

OK on an easy bleed
If you're having a problem finding veins on a patient that has already been stabbed multiple times (which is likely as you wouldn't need a vein finder on an easy bleed), you're not going to be able to see beyond the bruising. The lights even when dimmed are quite bright when you're looking for a while.

A very effective device for hard to find veins
If ever you needed it, this is proof of how quickly tech develops, becomes easier to use and vastly more affordable. Vein finders were far larger machines that could cost thousands just a few years ago, and now we have this rechargeable handheld device for less than a hundred and fifty quid! Does it work? Yes, surprisingly well! Is it easy to use? Very, although the instructions could be slightly better. The unit I received came boxed with an EU dual-pin charger and charge lead, an EU to UK power adapter, a spare lens (a plastic shield that is said to be user replaceable) and a printed user manual. The manual is easy enough to follow although there appears to be a mistake in that it talks about connecting the battery, which isn’t possible as it’s a sealed unit with the rechargeable battery inside. The device only has three buttons that are responsible for powering the device ON/OFF and switching ON/OFF the Orange and Red LED diodes. Switching the Orange light on finds veins closer to the skins surface whilst the Red light is for deeper veins. Both light can be used simultaneously if required. I was very impressed by how effective the device is. Powering it on with the orange diodes illuminated and laying the unit against the skin was almost magical and veins began to appear in a very clear manner within the circle of light. I couldn’t help think that it was a bit like having X-ray vision and it made finding veins on everyone tested extremely easy. The red diodes really accentuate veins and the cordless device makes it far easier to draw blood successfully. It’s a great device for medical staff and nurses at surgeries and patient care centres, and considering how effective it is it’s also very good value.
