Thanks for reaching out about the wattage of the XB13. Unfortunately, we do not disclose wattage and here is why.

Over the years we have seen posting such numbers results in a spec contest. Specs, and yes even watts can be measured in different ways. For example, receivers take a look at the wattage, then see a number of speakers driven, and distortion rates. All of which vary greatly. Also, watts do not tell you how efficient the drivers are, or any of the components that help the speaker sound great. Thus, telling an incomplete story.

Instead, we strive to make the best sounding speaker, that is rugged, water & dustproof, and has a long battery life. All of the things our customers have told us really matter to us. Thank you kindly for your understanding.

Can I leave it plugged in all of the time, or would this harm the battery?

Hi CC, thank you for your inquiry! Yes, it is safe to leave it plugged in 24/7 because charging stops when the Li-ion battery is full. A topping charge is only applied when the battery voltage drops to a certain level.

To maximize battery life, however, it is better to not keep it plugged in. Environmental conditions, not cycling alone, govern the longevity of lithium-ion batteries.

Do not charge in conditions too cold or too warm (below 41F or above 95F)
When not in use, keep the device stored in a cool place, partially charged.
Operating condition between 30 and 80 percent maximizes battery life.
Lithium Ion batteries have no memory and are not degraded with partial discharges.
The worst situation is keeping a fully charged battery at elevated temperatures.

Is it better than the JBL?

No. But it doesn't pay to compare anything in this price range to JBL, either. They used to be a mid-level car audio company that never found a foothold because they didn't stand out. Their contract with Ford allowed them to survive into the modern era, and they have definitely carved out their niche putting out tiny 24-30 watt speakers that are basically unmatched in the volume department. Whether you like the JBL sound profile or not it's subjective, but in this field, they are the measuring stick and very few come close, because most are 3W x 2, 5W x 2, 6W x 2. As the Sony rep here keeps saying they don't disclose their specs, but nowhere in this page does it explain what the 13 in it's name represents. I'd guess it's 13W, but I'd have to get one in hand and test it to know for sure. NOW In the last 40 years, they've gone from a mid-tier brand with price just shy of top shelf, to a brand that finally scratches the surface of audiophile quality drivers still at the just shy of elite price. So by sound profile yes, better than JBL, but you won't hear it over factory equipment, and you won't be hosting block parties, so again, I'll say NO.
