It's pretty common practice, especially on higher quality ones, but I can imagine there's a lot of people who may not be aware of that.The connection to the actual laptop is rather short, so if you have the laptop raised it is always sitting in an upwards angle. It's definitely best used when the laptop is sitting flat on the desk, or the splitter is at least sitting on a shelf.But it gets the job done, extending your laptop display to two additional monitors instead of mirroring them.
