dragonballz season 1 this is region 1 Review: The Definitive UK Release! - Dragonball Z has been hailed as the greatest action anime of all time, and as a long-time fan I agree whole-heartedly. UK fans have been waiting an age for a DVD box set that they don't have the import from the US, and it is finally here! The series goes straight into the action as a new foe by the name of Raditz come to Earth making threats and looking for a man named 'Kakarot', and even goes so far as to kidnap the main protagonist Goku's son! After the final battle with this menace, the series grows dull for a good while as the good guys train to prepare for the arrival of Raditz's two comrades, Nappa and Vegeta. But once they touch down on Earth the action kicks off once again and this lasts through to the end of the season, making the training arc well worth the wait. If anything it only adds more anticipation as the impending danger looms over all of the main characters. The restoration work that they carried out really paid off, the animation is so crisp, clean and colourful! Obviously there's going to be a few issues with things being slightly out of proportion or the line-art looking a little torn, but anime first aired in the late 80's, it's a very old animation, and that is how it looked originally anyway. What's important is that they've managed to restore and immortalise everything onto an easily accessible set of DVDs! The English dub on this particular set is to a very high standard in terms of voice acting quality. This is a re-dubbed version by Funimation instead of the original one by Ocean Group. Funimation took over dubbing the rest of the series halfway through Season 2, and all the actors from Seasons 2.5-9 returned to re-dub Season 1, and by that time they'd gained a lot of experience at playing their characters. Sean Schemmel does a particularly amazing job at playing Goku, and Christopher R. Sabat joins him in a fantastic portrayal of Piccolo and Vegeta. And to top it all off this DVD box set contains THREE versions of the series for you to watch: the original Japanese voices and music, the English Funimation re-dub with the original Japanese music, OR the English dub with the new music by Nathan Johnson (the Bruce Faulconer score comes into the series halfway through Season 2), giving you the choice of three preferences when you watch the series! The Nathan Johnson music isn't as good as the Bruce Faulconer score in my opinion, but it still does the job and I can't wait to hear the Faulconer music (and the ORIGINAL Funimation dub) in the next box set from Episode 68 onwards! Fantastic packaging, a fantastic re-dub, fantastic restoration, and, of course, a FANTASTIC series. Childhood dream
When i was growing up i would rush home after school to make sure i'd make it in time to watch Dragonball Z, every day without fail i'd make sure i was home to watch it. I always wanted it on video but was never able to find it, so seeing this and finding out they are slowly releasing all of DBZ on dvd pretty much made my childhood dream a reality. The ability of being able to watch DBZ any time i want? Absolutely fantastic! The first season contains the Saiyan Saga from the very first episode to the final fight between Goku and Vegeta. It comes with 6 dvds in the case and contains all 39 episodes and some bonus stuff on the final dvd. I ordered and it arrived pretty quickly in safe packaging with no damage at all. If your like me and grew up on this then it is a deffinate must have and is totally brilliant. I'd strongly suggest buying this for the sake of nostalgia alone, if you grew up on this the chances are you'll love the characters and feel a deep emotional bond to them like alot of us DBZ fans so this is perfect to re-live those moments and watch them with other people who may have not seen it before or onto your children.

Your Wish Is Granted
I'd almost given up hope of ever finding a Region 2 release of this (although I notice plenty of the reviews here say that the Region 1 version is in fact compatible) but it seems that either Shenron or Porunga has granted my- and many other fans'- wish. Dragonball Z still sets the benchmark for Japanese manga series. Naruto and Bleach could fusion dance themselves together and still come up short, such is the consistently high standard of this series. The fight scenes remain among the best in anime and for those not acquainted with the show, this first season, containing 39 episodes known collectively as the Vegeta Saga, offers a glimpse of things to come in later sagas. Aside from the suspense, action and humour on offer here, this is really just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how good this anime is. Let's not beat about the bush, it's got superlatives coming out its ears! I'll be buying each one in turn as they come out over the course of the next eighteen months, and would urge both enthusiasts and casual anime fans to follow suit. And for those who haven't yet gotten into anime, Dragonball Z's the only place to start!

Finally it arrived!
I got the set today, and i am extremely happy with it, it came in perfect condition. I ordered it from supermartUSA on the 26th, and it got here on the 11th, so it did take a little while, but thats no matter. So now about the box: The box itself is very nice but there are a few flaws, one of which it the way the discs are stacked on top of each other. This makes them very hard to get out and sooner or later im probably going to brake them, so i recommend backing them up just to be safe. Also if you get all of the seasons and put them all next to each other the spine is meant to make an image, but you can only see the spine image if you take the box out of the cover box. also all of the discs have the same image design, now enough of the flaws, onto the good points, the box is very nice, it feels glossy and smooth, it even comes with a book! the book has hero profiles, enemy profiles, episode summaries, and the history of dragon ball z. This is a great set and well worth the money. Now onto the video. Now you get a lot of people who constantly complain about the cropped aspect ratio and the noise reduction process which occasionally makes it loose some lines of detail, but its really not that bad, it looks perfect, so far i haven't seen any line loss, and you only miss a little bit of footage of the top and the bottom, most of the time it really doesn't matter. The only alternative to this is the Dragon boxes, but they are rare to find now and incredibly expensive. Just stick to these ones, there cheap, the video and the box looks great, and it even has 3 audio choices! You can pick English with Japanese music, English with English music, or fully Japanese. You don't get that with the dragon boxes! To summarize: THIS IS DAMN GOOD!

Great for DBZ fans
+ Great quality + 3 audio options + Kids enjoyed it too and was a nice experience to watch together - Not obvious which one is which between the 2 English audio dubs as they are only labelled English 1 & 2 rather than English/Japanese soundtrack. Also the dialogue seems louder and clearer on one vs the other - Subtitles 1 doesn't seem to work at all, and subtitles 2 appears to be based on the Japanese dialogue so doesn't match the English dub

If you're thinking you might like DBZ then you probably will.
Having previously caught a small number of episodes of DragonBall Z as a kid, which I can barely remember, my interest was rekindled over the past few years as I noticed various people on social media nerding out over DBZ. With a week and a half off work approaching I finally went for it; youtubed a few clips and then bought the DVD - and I'm really glad I did. My main worry had been that I wouldn't be able to get into it having not got into it at a younger age and that other DBZ fans might just be heavily influenced by nostalgia. That wasn't the case at all. Basically I'm writing this for any people who, like me, might be interested in this but aren't sure if it's just for kids. DBZ can be enjoyed by adults too - I'd put it in the bracket of the likes of Harry Potter, Pokemon and, especially, Doctor Who (there's a lot of the same 'saving the earth from aliens who don't appreciate how great humans are, by heroes who do' vibe). There's a lot of Sci-Fi elements to DBZ along with bits of martial arts, action and adventure. Personally, it's only the humour that I have some problems with: at best it's cheesy/silly but there are some light-hearted scenes which I just don't get which might be a cultural thing. However, for me it doesn't detract from the more serious aspects of the programme and the main plot. I'm on Season 2 now and the other thing I'd note is that from what I can tell the 'seasons' that the DVDs are split into is a pretty loose term. It seems to just be a massive ongoing story (I'm on episode 50-something now in 'season' 2 and the plot is still directly related to events from the first several episodes) so if you're gonna get into this be prepared to be in it for the long haul (300ish episodes) because there won't be an easy point to stop halfway through.

KAUFEN!!

Dragonball Z Fans Need To STOP CRYING!
This is my moms Amazon account I used to buy this boxset, so i'm leaving a review. This boxset is worth every penny, if not more. I've seen and heard alot of DBZ fans out there CRYING AND BITCHING because of the episodes being in widescreen. WHO CARES IF YOU LOSE A LITTLE BIT OF FOOTAGE ON TOP AND BOTTOM? You still know what's going on and you still see the main stuff you need to see. Would you rather pay $[...] for a DVD with 3 episodes from the first season, or would you rather get ALL THE EPISODES from Season 1 for $[...]? I could care less if they are in widescreen or full screen. I love Dragonball Z, and this boxset is a quality product and it's very cheap for what you are getting. I'd suggest to any Dragonball Z fan to pick this up. No more having to buy 10-12 DVDs at $[...] a piece to get a Season/Saga. 5 Stars!

By Far The Best Version of Season 1 of Dragon Ball Z.
This box set of Dragon Ball Z contains the entire Vegeta Saga. The Vegeta Saga makes up the first 39 episodes of Dragon Ball Z. The story of Goku and his friends from the classic show Dragon Ball continues with Goku finding out he comes from an alien race of fighters known as saiyans. Now his past has caught up with him and he and his friends must defeat these powerful foes or the people of Earth will face certain doom. This box is crucial for any collector of Dragon Ball Z as it introduces Vegeta, one of the most popular characters in Dragon Ball Z history. Specifically, the set has 6 discs and very little extra features, but any real fan of Dragon Ball Z will not buy this for extras. They will buy this for the excellent story, the great dialogue, the economic value, and of course the action. The way the discs are packaged is annoying, but you get used to it. I have heard much hype about how this set will ruin Dragon Ball Z because it is in Widescreen, but to be honest this is just not the case. Now I consider myself a true fan of Dragon Ball Z, and I am sad that you do lose some of the picture due to this, but most real fans will easily overlook the loss. I thought the Widescreen would cut much more picture than it actually did. By the second episode, I actually got used to the new look of the screen. The sound and picture are great, and you can hear the English dialogue with either Japanese or American music behind it, or you can hear the original Japanese version of the show. I enjoy listening in English, but with the Japanese subtitles on to spot where the dialogues differ, I find this to be very interesting. The English music for this set isn't as good as in others such as the Buu and Cell DVDs, but I still think it is better than the Japanese music, though I know my opinion on this matter is probably with the minority. One thing this set adds that I wish previous ones would have is the Marathon Mode. You can watch every episode on one disc one after another and see them as if they were one gigantic episode. You skip the opening and ending themes and the "Last time on Dragon Ball Z..." part. Of course, you can still watch these parts for every episode if you want.Another great thing about this set is the value. You get at least seven episodes on each DVD but the last, and to get the first 39 episodes of Dragon Ball Z for around $30.00, a price you could easily pay for 3 episodes(and I have), is just incredible. The key to buying this set is the show itself. Many of the other versions of this saga cut so much footage that they pack the entire saga down to only 25 episodes. This is a tragedy which has finally been fixed. A specific example is the episode called, "The Strangest Robot". This episode was never in the old translation, well most of it. This Saga has many wonderful and tragic moments including the first death of Goku, the first appearance of King Kai(and Vegeta as mentioned above), the awesome battle of Goku versus Vegeta, Gohan's training with Piccolo, and of course Piccolo's sacrifice. As mentioned above, another good thing about this set is the improved voices. When this show originally aired, I noticed the voices changed between the Namek and Freiza Sagas, but they have finally re-dubbed the first two sagas. Of course this is also the set's only down side to me. I already own many DBZ sets including the Cell Games, Majin Buu, and Fusion Sagas. If they re-release them with new dialogue, better sound, better picture, or for a better value or something I will feel like a fool and a bit annoyed. Personally, I hope they re-release upto and including the Frieza Saga, but my frustration only proves I am a true fan. This set is a great value, contains 39 episodes of what I consider to be the greatest action cartoon and anime of all time, and is for any true fan of Dragon Ball Z, or even someone who enjoys anime.
