They block out 83% of surround ambient noise by just wearing them. **Q: Can volume be controlled (up/down) on the headphones?** A: Yes. You can adjust the volume on the headphones when using them over Bluetooth. The volume buttons are not active when using them with the 3.5mm audio cable since the headphones are powered off when using them wired connection. **Q: Do the large ear pads come off ? And what is underneath?** A: Yes. You get both the over-ear cushions that come on the headphones and you also get a set of the smaller on-ear cushions that are included so you can take off the over-ear and replace with the smaller ones. We use them daily and love that there is the option to do Bluetooth when needed (even though we prefer to have them corded). Comes with a nice case for storing, with room for cords. After 3 months of almost daily use the cord didn't seem to be working properly and the sound started coming out only 1 side. After contacting support they had a new cord being sent to us right away.
