Said animal has a bacteria laden tongue usually with scraps of food on it, after cleaning itself and licking it's butt; in a week the water can get slimy even with the filter in it. I clean mine every 7-10 days just by emptying the water, giving it a good going over with a washcloth, rinsing the filter and putting it back in, then filling up with clean fresh water. Since it is so easy to clean, takes about 5 minutes, take the time to do this. I love my little kitty, he deserves fresh water all the time.
