Statistical Mechanics of Elasticity (Dover Books on Physics)

One of the neat things about this book is when it was written, it provides insight on views at the time the book was originally written which allows for contrasting to modern day views on the topic. The footnotes and works cited list is excellent and I read a number of those articles to learn more about the specific ideas and concepts mentioned. Even if you haven’t seen the material before the book does a nice job of linking concepts covered in one place to concepts covered in other places so you can build up your understanding.

I did not have a statistical mechanics background before starting to read this book. The development of the subject is very clear. I have only read the first 4 chapters, but I can say its a very good book to understand statistical mechanics fundamentals. It does help if you already have a continuum mechanics background. Hopefully, I can finish reading the book this year!

The book is well organised and clearly written. The material is very rigorously exposed; an appropriate (high) level in calculus and statistics is needed to take profit from this book.However, it is difficult to understand to whom this book is addressed. Sure, the book does not suit needs of engineers who would like to increase their knowledge on the fundamental aspects of elasticity theory, because from an engineering point of view, the material is presented in an unnecessarily complicated way. Researchers in physics seem to be the appropriate target audience, though questions in elasticity are not mainstream research field nowadays.

I read the first two chapters in this book and I found deep ideas displayed in a simple, and clear way in this book.

落丁が無かったがインクがにじんで文字が見えない部分があった。それ以外は、特に汚れも見えず期待どうりであった。内容としては、統計力学と、一般相対論の知識があると解りやすいかもしれない。
